someone told me that over the counter medicines for colds and cough are useless because they do not really cure the illness. they only help you relax but does not really do any healing at all. is there a truth to this? if so i wont buy over the counter medicines for cough and colds and just drink plenty of water and get enough rest. do you still buy OTC medicines for cold and coughs? were theye effective or useless??

yes it is true, A cold is a viral infection and is not cured by medicine. The medicine relieves some symptoms but does not get rid of the cold. When my kids are sick I usually don't give them any medication unless they have a fever.

I too feel that over the counter medications do not cure an illness. It is just a temporary relief to whatever illness you may be feeling at the time. You will feel okay for a few hours or so but later you will have the same symptoms again. I will take Nyquil at night if I am feeling stuffy and it will help me get through the night but will feel bad again when I wake up in the morning.

I think the majority of people just want to releive themselves from the pain that are feeling and that is all that matters. I do that too.

I use over the counter remedies because it is alot cheaper than a prescription. I think prescriptions are better but I cannot afford the expense right now.
