Do you support the ban on smoking in public places?

Are you in favour of a ban on smoking in public places? Do you have a ban in your country and what effect has it had? Are our heads of state trying to nanny us? Do they think we are too thick to make judgements for ourselves? What are your thoughts on the subject?

i wory about this? What are we going to allow to be banned next. once freedom starts to be eroded its a slippery slope. I truely believe without 9/11 no state would get away with the things we now accept. I feel like screeming, Waken up world, look what they are doing. Sooner or later we will take notice, but will it be too late?

Totally in agreement with you there, we are getting told more and more what we can and can't do, little by little the governments are turning us into little robots! Thank you eskarena1 for your comments - have a great day!

With respect to people who don't smoke, it's better to put up some places where people can smoke and in our country they place some sign where people can smoke and no smoking in some places. I think they are just being fair and to those people who really don't follow instruction.. well let the law enforce to discipline them.

In the United States it is up to individual cities and states to define where smoking can and cannot occur. Many cities have banned smoking in all public buildings. I, however, happen to live in a city that has not banned smoking in any building or place. (insert frown here). I have no problem with someone choosing to smoke...it is their right to do with their body as they see fit. However, I am very much opposed to being forced to breathe the second hand smoke from their smoking. It has been proven that second hand smoke is just as damaging as smoking, so why should my right to not smoke be squashed by a smoker? Smoking should be banned in public buildings such as restaurants, courthouses, college buildings and so on. The cities that have imposed a smoking ban did so in fear that restaurant business would suffer. However, that has not been the case. At least in the followup studies that I have seen from two very large cities, restaurant business actually increased!

Hi crazynurse, thank you for your comment. Both Northern Ireland and Scotland have now banned smoking in restaurants and pubs and I don't think it has affected their trade much as I guess the people who didn't like smoke have now started to go to pubs more often. Thank you for the incite to the trend where you live. Have a good day

I smoke so the ban in public places, I can respect other's feelings. What makes me upset is that people react so terribly about it. They don't seem to understand that yeah it's a habit, addictive and it's not always easy to just stop. Instead of gripping about it help other's don't be se mean. I don't put people down for wearing perfume and cologne and it bothers me, who knows what types of cancer it can be causing. I am not trying to get it banned like I am a righteous person with no bad habits or no wrongs. The heads of state try to appease people, they pick the subject that is most gripped about and start making laws about it, like the spanking stuff, it's not spanking that is the problem it's the people who have abused.

Hi minerc, thank you for your comment. I totally agree with you about the heads of state picking the most talked about topic to raise their status, thus creating more votes. Have a good day!

Oh yes it's definately a touchy subject and I know there are some smokers out there who don't care, but I really do think places should be set aside for smokers.

I do agree with it because i know what its like to have smokers around when you are a non smoker, But i also know what it is like to be a smoker and i think they have taken it a bit too far, i don't think it realy harms anyone if you are outside smoking. Still its not nice to be walking down the road with someone blowing smoke in your face...
