Is it so damaged that it needs to be fixed? Oftentimes, just cleaning up the wounds (making the damage even and in an oval with a sharp knife) and being patient will do the trick. Keep an eye out for insects, water and fertilize. We had some storm-damaged trees a while back and this was the advice given to us by our tree company. They recommended AGAINST putting any sort of goo or Tree Bark Repair solution on it.
