Well .. I like thrift stores , eBay , and Amazon best myself. Depending on what kind of books you are looking for you might try searching for something like " *topic here* books used " and see if theres any sites for that genre? Yard sales are also great, but take time , and are pretty scarce this time of year.. LOL

Amazon marketplace usually has second hand books that you can pick up for the price of the postage.
And don't forget project gutenberg which allows you to download books that are out of copyright for free

Have you tried any used book stores in your area ? Another place to look would be at flea markets as people are always trying to get rid of their stuff there quite cheep . Also maybe you could check with some of your friends , people such as myself never want a book after I have read in once . And would gladly give it away if someone wanted it .
If you are just looking for something new to read , you could try your public library .
