Hi! I think cichlids would be a great choice. I have blood parrots and angelfish in my largest tank (both of the cichlid family). Cichlids are very intelligent fish and fun to watch. I was told by the owners of the pet store that African cichlids should not be with other fish - even other cichlids - because they are too agressive, so if you are thinking of African cichlids, then those are the only fish you should probably put in that tank. Otherwise, community tanks with different varieties of fish are great, too. Make sure you do some research to check for compatibility of different fish species, though. Let us know what you decide! :-)

well.. gold fish.. they are nice... but these require loadsa care too.. well though they are a bunch o real good community fishes.... they seem a little too soft natured.. lol.. they can take a beating from pretty much any other fish in the tank... so give that a thought too... well i would say gold fish.. if you were ready for the extra time and effort that you might need to put into it... well same is the case wit tetras too... they are reall good lookin fishes.. but most of em require a lot of care... very sensitive guys... cichlids might be a better choice.. hardy.. most of em real nice lookin too... try them..

How big is your tank? I'm guessing fairly large if you were thinking of an arowana lol. Cichlids are great, what kind though? South American or African? Here's a good link with different profiles for the fish. The 2 icons on the top are for some different cichlids.

for cichilds, ud better put only cichilds, and nothing else. i once had a beautiful planted aquarium, and accidentally introduced 2 cichilds into the aquarium. they wreaked havoc, ate my beautiful tetras, tore up my plants, and chewed on my angelfishes fins! so, for cichilds, just provide plenty of rocks, NO PLANTS! a tank of small shoaling tetras would be a much better and beautiful bet, provided you have proper filtration, plants and lotsa cover

If you've never had fish before, or haven't for awhile, try fish like guppies, platies, or swordtails. They're very peaceful community fish that come in lots of different colors and don't get too big, so you can get quite a few. Also, since they're all livebearers, they're very easy to breed if you get the urge.
