There are a total of 8 major planets. Pluto was stripped by the International Astronomical Union of its status as a planet, and instead refered to it as "dwarf planet". Due to the fact that Pluto failed to meet one of the following criterias to be a planet.
- Must be in orbit around the sun.
- Must be large enough to take an almost circular shape.
- Must clear its orbit of other objects.
In the case of Pluto, its highly elliptical orbit overlaps that of Neptune's. Which means the former celestial body failed to meet the third requirement.
