It's a type of bird that jumps up in the air from one spot in the grass. I can't remember the birds name, but their jumping thing is a type of mating call. I don't know if this is the answer you are looking for, but I seen this bird on Animal Planets Most Extreme last night and thought it was really bizare. They also had a mud dragger or something like that which jumped out of the water/mud puddle into the air, it was pretty wild.

im not sure exactly what you mean by "on the spot" but im gonna guess a kangaroo.
