How old were you when you started developing? How old were you when you started your menstral cycle?
I'm asking because I swear now girls are starting alot sooner than we did when we were younger.
My daughter is 10... She has not started yet- but is certainly developing.. She is already shaving her armpits and legs-- I had to let her start this past summer- The hair was quite noticeable.. I'm sure it will be soon when she will start her menstal cycle.
Do you think girls are mature enough mentally??
I'm pretty sure I didn't start until at least 13--
What do you think??

I was 12 1/2 when I started my period for the first time. I started shaving because of noticable hair growth when I was about your daughters age, maybe a little older.
I had a friend that started her period in elementary school. I can't remember her exact age, all I know is that it was really young because most girls don't start until middle school.

I'm hoping my daughter holds off to 12 or 12 1/2... Yep that is why I taught her how to shave too-- Noticable hair. Poor kiddo's.. She's already moody so I'm wondering if it is a hormone- soon to start her menstral or just being a girl.
thanks for the comment!

I too think that girls today are much quicker to develop and reach puberty. Oddly enough, most boys don't seem to be as quick at catching up in that area.
I started my cycle at age 11 but I was very early to develop. I had to wear undergarments by 3rd grade! It was horrible for me too!!!!! Me and one other girl had "womanly" virtues!

It is happening earlier I have a 10 yr old neice who is developing and has hair under her arms, and complains of cramps and stuff so I am sure she will start soon. I did not start until 11...but my mom at 9...so it runs in our family to start a little sooner. I still think they are developing earlier these days!

yes i think girls are much younger now. i was about 10 when i started developing and the day before my 11th b-day i started my cycle but i was the only one out of my friends that started that early. i'd like to know why they are starting early its very strange that when i was younger it was not that early and now its normal for girls at that age.

I was 13... but it stopped for more than three months cause i was hospitalized and i think its because of the medicine i was taking during that time. I remember in a day I was taking 12 tablets. whew!

From an experience with a cousin who I was pretty close to during my childhood, she started to "fill out" at the age of 11, making me think she was doing a lot of push-ups or lifting weights. It was also on my 13th birthday (she turned 12 around 3 months later) that she gave us all a big scare while in the bathroom. Both, my mother & aunt assured us all that she was OK, but didn't explain. It was years later in high school health class when I finally put two & two together & figured it out.
My first girlfriend was 12 when she had her first period. I can't remember how that convo came up, but she told me.

I think I was later than my friends. I was around 13 or 14 but always so irregular it was hard to tell if this was really it or not. LOL I would have one period then 6 months later another one for many years. I know many girls today who have started as early as 9, bless their heart. I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago and I swear I would have done much sooner if the dr. would have done it for me. I have not missed this part of being a woman at all!

Let's see. I was 9 when my mom gave me the talk- and she did that after lifting up my shirt and saying "Yep, it's time to talk!". It was then when I got a training bra. I started menstruating a couple of months after I turned 12.

They do change and grow up fast. I started developing at the age nine and my daughter too. Then I started my cycle at age 11 and a half years old. My daughter hasn't started hers yet and she's 11.

I know I was thirteen, I can remember quite clearly missing a geography test because I had cramps so bad I had to go home. My daughter is twelve and she got hers for the first time in November. I agree with you though, they do seem to be starting much earlier. She is already way more developed physically than I was at her age.

I was very skinny as a child and actually didn't get my period until I was 14 1/2 (at the beginning of my THIRD year at high school) but I do remember a couple of girls getting their periods at the age of 12 at our school.

I was a late starter too-- I can remember wishing I would wake up in the morning with it- What was I thinking?? lol.. My daughter giggles and giggles when we talk about it- I'm pretty sure she isn't mentally mature enough yet to deal with it-
thanks for the comment!

My mum was a late starter too - and guess what she has the enviable "trait" (even though she's got Medittaranean ethnicity) of not having ANY hair on her legs, arms or underams. No waxing, shaving necessary. Only things she used to do was pluck her eyebrows. Sigh - I wish I could have inherited THAT from her.

Hi, Kris. I was ten when I was around nine when I started developing hormonally, and I was ten when I started my menstral cycle. My daughter is twelve now, and she started around eleven and a half. I think it depends on the girl and her family history.

I was about 10 when i started to physically develop and i believe i started my menstrual cycle just after i turned 12!! I think that girls are definately mature enough mentally and i think that i was exactly her age when i started the developing part of it so i say give her a year or so and she will most likely be starting her cycle also! Be sure to have a talk with her about this though if you have not already so that she does not feel frightened at all when it does happen!!

I started when I was 10. I was not happy at all. It was a surprise, although I had always been tall, and had been mistaken for my teacher -like I said, I was tall! LOL
My mom had discouraged me from shaving my legs and underarms, but when I started my period, three months after turning 10, she went ahead and let me. I was thin too! I know having extra body fat contributes to starting early, but this was before I actually needed to lose weight. LOL

Yes, I agree, girls seem to be developing much earlier. I know most my friends were much later but I was 10. And the only good thing is that I was expecting it already because the doctor had warned my mom that I was developing quite quick. The warning from the doctor helped at least to get my mom to talk to me, that helped.

I was twelve when I started to notice some hair growing on my armpits... but I had my first menstrual flow when I was in first year high school at the age of thirteen. But I believe children nowadays develop a lot faster than we were before. I even have a cousin who had her first menstruation as early as 9.
