on any of the charts. An example would be Subarban Tragedy - they are a local band who is just starting to make it big. Also the Presets is a good one. Sometimes these bands are the ITunes free download of the week. Maybe it's a band from your area that's just making it big.

I enjoy alot of music that is not in the top 40 although I still prefer the old stuff over the new apart from a few artists.
So if you don't mind I will name old with new.
Santana - absolutely brilliant (not his latest albums though!)
Miles Davis - A legend
Trilok - Indian jazz
Tom Waits - A brilliant artist
Paul Weller - Great song writer and musician
Corrine Bailey Rae - Excellent song writer and has just made it big in the UK.
Loudon Wainwright III - Excellent and often amusing songwriter.
The Pogues - Excellent Irish band
I hope you will give some a go, they are all excellent artists!!

The Pogues are amazing - especially Rum,Sodomy and The Lash.
Withoutwings - thanks for reminding me about Black 47
stumbled accross them the other week on cdbaby while looking for Joe Strummer stuff (he enjoyed watching them play aparently - this would have been arround the time he was working with/in The Pogues so makes sense)
I'm listening to the samples on amazon.com of their album bittersweet sixteen and they are good - that is an intense version of The Patriot Game

Do you know a band - Black 47? They are an Irish band... from New York (but Ireland originally)

Can I second Miles Davis and Tom Waits? I love both of their music!
I have heard the Pogues, too, and they make great music.

How about bands from other countries that haven't made it in the States? From Australia, I would recommend "Wolfmother" (70's inspired - hot band right now over here), george (very melodic), grinspoon, Alex Loyd, Little Birdy, The Waif, The Whitlams, Powderfinger.

Woops - I mis-spelt a couple of these: it's actually "Alex Lloyd" (one of my favourite artists ever) and "The Waifs". It might be an idea to go to Amazon and hear a sampling of their music before downloading and to get some reviews, because I'm not sure what your tastes are.

My little sister just got me into a band called Kane. I call it "country for country music haters." *wink* It has a country-western/punk feel (if that's possible). I've also been listening to a lot of AFI lately.

Another band you might like is Cartel. (I'm a little biased because I went to high school with the bassist and he's still a good friend, but even if I didn't know them I would still think they're great!)

The Hours - sort of indie, been compared to Embrace but a lot darker and intense.
Mr. Hudson and The Library - Too Late, Too Late is a great song, very imediate, sounded like it could be a new one from Pete Doherty (if he'd got back with Carl and back on top form) the first time I heard it.

I've always been curious about Babyshambles. They're always in celebrity news magazines because Kate Moss is dating (married?) one of the band members.

I'd suggest checking some podcasts, such as KCRW.com's Tune of the Day and Morning Becomes Eclectic. The latter is a series of live broadcasts from KCRW's studios. In the past they've featured a range of groups from Latin rock to alternative rock to pop. You can also listen to their radio streams online.

Corporate Avenger is a great band. They're hard to label...somewhere around rap, metal, punk. They touch on a lot of social and political issues. Here is a fan site to get a sample of some of their music from myspace.com : http://www.myspace.com/tribalavenger
Enjoy!

Oh man - you should hear some of the stuff my fiance wants to play... Skinny Puppy... Tu pac... just to name a few. I have vetoed those. I compromised by saying he is allowed to sing "Melt With You" - can't think of who it's by now... maybe Modern English?

Sort of a non sequitor, but my husband wanted to play "Beat on the Brat" by the Ramones at our wedding. Cool idea, but ultimately vetoed.

Don't know if you'll care for any of these guys, but I listen to a lot of Industrial music....the real hardcore stuff would be Skinny Puppy, Hocico or Wumpscut...others that are a little more accessible and even catchy are VNV Nation, Imperative Reaction and Covenant
http://www.myspce.com/vnvnation (listen to Perpetual)
http://www.myspace.com/imperativereaction (listen to Judas)
good luck

Edmonton had some good local bands- I liked Murder City Sparrows, and Whitemud Drive. MCS had one song that was popular on local radios, but I don't think they've been played out of province...

Well most, if not all of the music I love to listen to at home, in the car and on my ipod in the gym is the 80s. I love the 80s best era for music. Pretenders, Fleetwood Mac, Level 42, UB40, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, here are some great choices for you. I can't stand music of today, it's either boy or girl bands or horrid rap. Good luck!

Thank you. I'm already a huge 80s fan. Everything was better back then :) I love more new wave than 80s pop - but it's all good. Do you know a band called the Beloved? I'm trying to find someone else who remembers them. They had a really good song "Time After Time" ("...you challenge me for no reason - I know that I'm impossible and deceiving - I've seen the signs - you're telling me that you're leaving... time after time ...)" It might be early 90's actually.
Oh and Alphaville's "Big in Japan" is another one I love.

Any kind - just not something that is "popular" at present. I'm sicking of hearing the same things played on the radio over and over again. I often listen to the Spanish station just to break up the monotany.
I'm very eclectic in my music tastes.
