recently ive been reading that dental hygiene is very important for cats and they can experience many illnesses if you dont take care of their teeth. i give her a combination of hard and soft food. when they eat hard food it helps to clean the plaque off her teeth, but i was wondering if i need to start brushing her teeth and if so how to manage that without having half my hands scratched off

I brush my cats teeth. They usually don't mind too much, they have poultry flavored toothpaste. I use a finger brush when I do mine. It fits on the tip of your finger. If you can get the cat to let you put your finger in its mouth and run along its teeth then he'll probably let you brush them. You don't have to brush them the way humans do. You just run the brush down each side and over the front once. Their toothpast will foam and do all the work for you. It's best to do it every day. I like to do it when my daughter and i brush ours. It really does help their teeth. I've seen animals without teeth due to them being pulled because they got too many cavities. it's groose. They also sell food that's designed to reduce the amount of tarter and treats too, but brushing is the best way to go. Good luck .

My cat has THE WORST breath in the world, and I know it is because he has gingivitis. I try to brush his teeth, but he is old (14) and resists me. I only ever get the outside bit of his teeth done. I feel horrible - like I have failed him - he is so well cared for in all other respects. I hate to think how his teetch could fall out :(

I know dental hygiene is important for both cats and dogs, but the problem with brushing their teeth is you only get the outer side of the teeth and not the inside. We give our cat some treats that seem to work really good that are tarter control. Like "Whisker Lickens" made by Purina or "Friskies Indoor Cat Treats". Both of them are for tarter control and when we have taken her to the Vets he doesn't even ask if we brush her teeth, but says keep doing what ever you are doing as they are very clean. Dry food yes does help, but isn't really enough. You need to get some that are for tarter control. Just like with our dog we give him Milk Bones. We give him one right after he eats and even as a treat. His teeth are also very clean. Now animals out in the wild would eat raw bones and that is how they kept there teeth in shape. I wouldn't and haven't even tried to brush my pets teeth as I might lose a finger or two or I will get so clawed up I wouldn't beable to sleep at night...

no. i don't because they would bite and scratch and it wouldn't be a good situation. i use a cat food that has something for their teeth in it. their teeth look pretty clean and healthy to me. they're not yellow or anything. when i go to the vet i will probably have him clean their teeth so they don't get sick or anything. sickness is far more expensive than having their teeth brushed by a professional. i give the cats hard food as a regular food and soft food when they are good. which isn't very often. they also like tuna and i will give them so of that when i eat a tuna sandwich. i usually don't use the whole can on one sandwich. there are some things you can get at the pet store. they are rubber and go over the cats nails. they're like $20 for a package but they would keep her from scratching you. you can put them on the front and back claws. they have different sizes so check to see what size you might need before buying. you wouldn't want to make 20 trips to get the right thing. lol. good luck

Last year, my vet told me that she was concerned about the amount of tartar on one of my Tabitha's back teeth. She also told me that she could clean the cat's teeth, but would have to check the cat's blood first. I did agree to the blood test, as Tabitha was 14 years old and probably needed one anyway. That test set me back by 199 dollars. During that time, I also did some research and found a way to clean some of the tartar off the cat's teeth. Fortunately, Tabitha was a very trusting, loving cat who let me clean her teeth. I miss her so much, having lost her last October.

I have read up on doing this, but never tried. We give our cats hard and soft food daily. PLus we give them tartar control treats as well as the Greenies which are suppose to be one of the best things for their teeth.

I give my cats Greenies and dry food. They do not get can food often except for holidays. They get great reviews on their teeth when I take them to the vet for their annual vaccinations.

No, I don't like to brush my cat's teeth because my cat is old enough to be trained for teeth brushing. I guesss I'll try it with the kittens, lol.

We use special treats for the cats to eat that does the same thing.

I've tried several times on my oldest and he has thrown up on me each time. I just as soon find the tartar control snacks and let them go at that.

That would also be my question. How do you do this short of knocking them out. I can barely keep their nails clipped. I know they would never let me brush their teeth.

How can it happen. Have you ever done that. This is too bad to have the hands inside the teeth of a cat.

No sorry, I do not brush any of my cats teeth. They just get dry catfood and then hang around outside and go hunting. If I were to brush their teeth I hope that there would be a pair of gauntlets to wear. That or oven mits and roll kitty up in a blanket or towel.

I have never brushed my cat's teeth with a toothbrush but there are kitty treats you can get for them that are supposed to brush there teeth and keep there breath fresh and this is what I buy for my cats . You only give them a couple a day and I use them more or less as treats they get them when they are good (which is everyday lol ). They know where they keep them and if you go near the closet they come booting it for a kitty treat .

I brush my cat's teeth once a week or so. She only eats hard food, but the vet said that it was important that she get used to me brushing her teeth. I bought special cat toothpaste, and she doesn't seem to mind the taste. I usually wrap her lightly in a blanket in case she decides to attack, like I do when I clip her claws, but she doesn't struggle much if at all.
