My eldest daughter is getting close to school age and my partner and I are torn between sending her to a public or private school. Politically I err towards public, but in the area we live the public schools aint so good. So, is it a sell out to go private? Do other parents have this dilema with their children?

Yes we did have this dilema. I was terrified to send my daughter to Public school because they are not so great here either. I mean I think in general the public school system has a lot of things to work out.
Anyways, we did have her in a Private pre-school and it was great. The teachers were great, they really cared about the students, the student to teacher ratio was low, and the teachers actually spent one on one time with the students. But once Kindergarten came around the price got to be too much.
So we opted for a Charted School. It has been great. the classes are still small, the teacher still spend one on one time with the students, there are not near as many students in the whole school, they teach with each individual childs personality in mind, and they really care about the children.
I think my daughter gets a better education at her Charter School that she would have at public school, plus I don't have to worry as much about the gangs and what not because the school has a uniform policy, and they have an locked door that you need a code to get in.
I would definately check out Charter Schools as they are becoming more and more popular these days. They have most of the benefits of a private school without the cost.
It does take a little more effort on the parents part because most Charter Schools don't have busses and the after school programs are limited, if they even have one. I have had to make a strong effort to get my daughter into extra-curricular activities but it has been worth it.
I don't ever think it is a sell out to want what is best for your child, and that is what this decission boils down to.
