What are the advantages of using a fingertip bowling ball?

I have been using a standard bowling ball for the past four years and am not getting any better. I am considering trying a fingertip ball. I see most of my league bowlers using them and see how well they bowl. What do you like about a fingertip ball? I know you can throw hooks better but what else is it good for and is it better than a standard ball?

A fingertip ball is good for the person who would like to expand their knowledge, score and expertise in bowling. Although it gives you a different control of the ball, spare shooting can be more difficult as you adjust to the hook created. Also lane conditions come into play regarding the oil conditions and pattern on the lanes that control the area the ball hooks and how much it hooks. The equipment today also allows for bigger or smaller hook according to the way it is drilled, have the person who drills your ball watch you bowl a couple of games and then get their recommendation. I threw a conventional ball for 10 years and averaged 165. After throwing a fingertip, or semi fingertip for 30 years the highest my average got was 220. Good luck and enjoy a sport that can give you joy for many years!

This is very good information and appreciate your feedback and best wishes on my bowling. It definitely made a big difference for you by switching balls. I am sure it will take some getting used to but will probably give it a try and keep my conventional ball as well.

On the last comment, just remember that when you switch finger tips. You will have to change the way you bowl too. The fingertips let you get better lift out of the bowl. The way you hold your bowl will change. You have to make sure that you don't break your wrisit when you throw your new ball. I suggest that before you have a ball drilled, you need to do all of research on the bowl that is going to work for you. There is much think about with new balls. I have 7 balls and they all do something different. I hope this helps. So good luck and keep in touch. I would like to hear things are going.

This is very good information to know as well as I know that I will have to change my form and how I hold the ball. It will be weird at first. I am planning on waiting for my current league to be over before I try the fingertip ball. I was just looking in a bowling magazine and they had all sorts of different balls. LOL You have a lot of bowling balls. Do you use one for spare shots as well?

My teammate last night gave me his fingertip ball to try and see how it feels and if I like it. If I like it, he said that I can keep it since he bought a new ball. My conventional ball is 14 pds and this one is 16pds so it is heavier and the feel is definitely different. I am going to practice tomorrow and see how it feels. :-)

You know..I have no idea of the difference between one bowling ball and the next..Matter of fact the one time I recall going bowling..my ball went the wrong direction..no pins behind me;)+

I've heard that basically it's good for putting spin on the ball. I'm not an avid bowler, I'm actually probably the most hilarious person you would ever watch bowling, but I have a cousin that is in the PBA (just because it was a dream of his, not really to compete) and we talk a lot about what he's doing, etc. It's kind of kewl.

There are a few advantages that I can think of. I use a fingertip bowling ball also.
You can make the ball curve into the pocket.
You have a better chance of picking up splits.
You can get a better aim at the pins by making it hook and pick up more pins.

Hey Kgwat70,
Using a fingertip ball does not necessarily give you more of an advantage, but for those of us that cannot get enough lift on our ball, we use fingertip grip for more hook, which will in turn five us more backend on the ball, so we get more pin action. So technically it does have other things it is good for

I was giving it a try the other day with some friends and teammates and I did not do any better with it than a regular ball. I would like to learn to hook the ball since I see people get strikes more often when hooking it instead of straight balling it. Thank you for your tip and advice. :-)

I have no idea how those work out for sure. I have never tried them before to tell you anything about them. I haven't had a chance to bowl just yet and I can't wait for when I do. I have played the computer game one and I have enjoyed it that I want to try the real one someday.
