"snow-nami", buffalo style

Buffalo, NY Snowstorm - Ever want to know what it looks like when a snowstorm rolls into town? Traffic Reporter Air Gordon (WBEN, Star 102.5) sees it all the time from the weather copter. "It's fascinating," he relayed to me. "The snow looks like something from The Poseidon Adventure. There is a virtual wall of snow... one minute it's clear, and the next it looks like a big wave is about to engulf the city."

First of all, this is NOT to make light of the Tsunami of 2204, as that was truly a disaster of uncomparable proportions. This is Buffalo, NY's idea of a "Snow-Nami". There are pictures taking from the air-traffic reporting helicopter as a storm rolled into the city from across Lake Erie. Here is a quote from the pilot: Ever want to know what it looks like when a snowstorm rolls into town? Traffic Reporter Air Gordon (WBEN, Star 102.5) sees it all the time from the weather copter. "It's fascinating," he relayed to me. "The snow looks like something from The Poseidon Adventure. There is a virtual wall of snow... one minute it's clear, and the next it looks like a big wave is about to engulf the city."http://www.buffalorising.com/city/archives/2007/01/snow_storm_a_gords_eye_vi.php For those of us living in areas where we see tons of snow every year, this isn't a big deal. But I know there are people here who have never even seen snow. Does it snow where you live? Have you ever seen snow yourself?

When I was in Saudi Arabia I saw a Dust-nami. It is what we call a Sandstorm. Take the picture you have posted and change the white into brown, and that is exactly what I saw. It was a wall of dust which gradually englufed us. It won't last long and leaves only a thin layer of dust behind. But the dust is unbearably hot.

I think that I would actually prefer snow, believe it or not. The dust must hurt as it hits you. Besides being hot, isn't it prickly? And it must get into your eyes, no matter what you do.

wow, those pictures are amazing (in the article that you linked to!) I've never seen pictures of a snowstorm rolling into town before. It never occurred to methat a snowstorm would look like that in the air! Very, very cool. Yes, I do live where it snows. Unfortunately. LOL! I really don't enjoy the cold weather and the snow of winter. I will be much happier when spring gets here. I always worry that a snowstorm will hit just when I am about to go to an event that I have been waiting weeks or months for, and we won't be able to get out and go to it. It's frustrating. Snow just doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose to me, and I hate the feeling of being too cold, and our house is not centrally heated. I sound like a grouch, don't I? LOL. Oh well, I'm really not. I just don't prefer the winter time.

I sound just like you, so I guess we're both grouches! We're having a crazy storm right now, and you can't see even across the street with so much blowing snow. I had planned to go out to watch the hockey game with friends, but I won't be doing that. They're cancelling just about all activities in the area. Worse than missing an event is even the possibility of getting stuck at work, isn't it? I'm like you. I hate to be cold, I hate wind, and I hate snow and snow sports... Bring on the springtime!

I live in Arizona, and I love snow. We don't get it in my area though. I did live in NY for a little bit, but not in your area. I know what snow is, but this is unreal what y'all get. Thanks for sharing with us my friend. Blessings, M&M

I'm glad to hear from you today, Margie. I was getting worried! Actually, we're getting blasted with snow off of the lake right now. I'm glad I'm all toasty warm in the house. I love Arizona; I've been to Phoenix and Scotsdale many times for meetings for my last job. Arizona would be my first choice if I were in a position to relocate, actually. I even loved it in July!

You're a photographer, aren't you? Have you never seen snow in person? It's just so hard for me to imagine that, since I've lived in this (horrible)climate my entire life.

I'm only about 60 miles or so from Buffalo-- Boy you guys have been hit twice this winter so far. We have snow here in Dansville.. Enough to sled and tube-- but it is so cold outside- Going to bundle up in a few minutes and head out in it! Thats a great picture- thanks for sharing. I love snow-- and I love NY because of the changes in season- Go out and have some fun in the snow!

I'm like you about the changes of season. I can't imagine not having the fall foliage, or the spring changes to anticipate and appreciate. Dansville is towards the central part of the state, isn't it? I would have to look at a map. Actually, we're getting blasted with Lake Effect snow and wind right now, so I won't be going out anywhere. Everything is cancelling or closed, and there are all kinds of travel advisories. Of course this was not predicted for our area, but that's what happens with the Lake effect storms. Good thing I can sit inside and wait for the guy to come and plow the driveway! Have fun sledding!
