OK - so it is now my turn for a rant! I am a product of the 60's and 70's, where feminism was growing in the Western world, and we were bought up to believe that there was nothing a woman could not achieve if she out her mind to it. To be honest, I have never thought for a moment, that in some places this might not be the case! But since joining MyLot, I have been appaled by some of the blatantly sexist attitudes from some people here. There are even threads here about whether it is acceptable to beat your wife, or whether women who smoke or drink alcohol are bad! I havwe been truly shocked and saddened, and I got to wondering.... do you think women will ever be treated equally and fairly in this wide world of ours? And if not - why not?

I can only say I hope that we will be treated equally, but I don't ever see it happening. I was raised to believe that I could do whatever I wanted. When I was told that a woman couldn't drive a 18 wheeler I set out to disprove them and did it. All my life I've done that. If someone told me I couldn't do something, I set out to prove that I could. My ex-husband even had the audacity to tell me that I couldn't make it without him and look at me now. Raising my kids, going to school and making a living working from home. I don't think there's anything a person can't do when survival mode kicks in.

Hi Rosie..
Well what do you mean? aren't women provided enough of opportunity today? arent they head to head with men in almost every field? what make you feel so that women are deprived of enough of opportunity? I think its only because, as you mentioned, you are the product of 1960's and 70s!
Well I think women solmenly provides chaalenges to male to think twice for their existence! Mens certainly have to be more competent to cope with women!

Well, it is true that in some places, such as Europe and the States, women have equal opportunities. But there are still many places in the world, where they are treated as second class citizens, where they are not allowed to admit to their own sexuality for example, and where they become mere chattels of their husbands, with no chance of a life or career of their own. That is what I was referring to.

Women are NOT head to head with men in almost any field. Do some research . In the United States of America, a woman will make approximately 76 cents to the dollar that a man will make IN THE SAME POSITION. And men don't really have to be more competent to cope with women. A man is more likely to get a pay raise or a promotion than a woman, even if they have the same qualifications (and sometimes even if he has fewer qualifications!). Open your eyes. Look at reality.

If you mean equally meaning treated like a man, I don't think so. We are fortunate to come from countries and societies where women and men have equal footings in society. In many middle eastern countries, it is obvious that they are not treated equally. Women are treated as if they are second class citizens. This is unfortunate but it does happen.
Having said that, the majority of women in those countries don't look at it us unfair. Isn't this ironic?

Well I guess that is because their sociey is so male-orientated, that they just have never had the opportunity to fulfil their potential, and to see what other opportunities there are out there for them.

I think with the increase in communications around the world that women will realist that they should be equal and eventually we will all be.
I think it terrible that women are still treated badly in some parts of the world.

Well i feel both men and women should be treated equally and should work and support each other to build the world we like to see. I am an optimist. I feel the women are progressing like never before even in developin countirres like mine as girls are topping schools and boards exams, more andmore women are entering male bastions like defence, police, airforce like fighter pilots, astronauts, judges, becoming business and political leaders. So change is happening though it will take time to reflect in society as social mindsets are slow to and sometimes resist change. Even laws now also provide more for women enpowerment so that she use her rights and get justice if she has ben victimised. It is time women are educated and employed so that she knows her rights and can fight for them. Media has also important role to play in this regard.

I think women should be treated euqally, but the fact shows that its not. in most asian countries, its very hard to do this, because the tradion here is that woman would be in inferior position. now, things are much better in cities, but in rural area this problem is very serious.
it would take a long time to change.
Have a good day.

this whole thing about men and women being unequal - is an "idea" which people seem to believe or make themselves believe. while it is true that men and women are exactly different from each other, i believe that there is really no point in comparing these two gender. men and women complement each other, and not compete with each other in terms of rights and privileges. i hope time will come that both men and women can accept that.

I think women will never be treated equally to men till the thought of freedom doesnt come to the whole women generation. Many women are afraid to face the world and are shut up from the world without and experience of the outer environment. This should come inside every women who would like to lead a great life with their own earnings.

i've been wondering too. I'm a tiny woman of 24 and never got a boyfriend yet. I smoke on the street and people are making a judgment based on my smoking habit. Men call me 'puta' all because I take a drag when I pass by. I wanted to yell at them, "I'm virgin!" lol. You just don't show they get you. Let them see you doing strange things, and never ever look at their eyes for too long. Show them they're not as important as you are. lol

will women ever be treated equally in this world?-i think so. we just have to fight for our rights. we have to let them know that we can do anything men can do. we don't have to be martyrs. it doesn't mean that if we are women, we have a low position in this world. we will be treated fairly in this world, we just have to be the one that makes it happen. =D (proud to be a woman!)

In today's world, I think women will have equal rigths and opportunities as men.
Now a days, you can see a lot of powerful women who is making it big in their chosen careers or field. Gone are the days where women are not allowed to work, and they just have to stay at home and take care of the kids. Now, women can do anything they please. We have women in themilitary, in the navy, we have women astronouts and most of them are really making it big.
I think, today women have more opportunity and we have better chances of being equal as the men.

For fear of being called a chauvinist i feel women, are the major, cause of their own problems. Women can never be treated equally if they do not stand up to men. Women sell their body for money . How can a man respect a woman or treat a woman equally if she has no dignity and will sell her body to the highest bidder. They run after men just because of the size of his pocket or the kind of car he drives.
In short equality between Men and women will nevre be, unless women first learn to respect themselves and behave with a little dignity.
Don't mis understand me my wife and i are equals, because she has dignity.

In what aspect? Biologically, we really can't be equal with men. There were studies that women have the same strength as men, however, we burn oxygen faster that's why we get tired faster. Emotionally, women are more emotional, we can express our feeling more better than men. If you are talking bout Rights, i guess the law already provides for that. we, as women must be firm in upholding our rights. it is so sad that some women dont stand up for their rights. they let other people abuse them.
