Beaten implies anger. You should never be mad or angry at a creature that is "inferior" to you. If you want to scold, or teach the dog anything, the only thing you should ever consider doing is a small, light tap on the nose. They know what you're doing, and it doesn't hurt them, but it teaches them that you're being serious, without the aggression..
Another thing you need to keep in mind is to divert their attention from when they do something wrong. Tell them "No", tap them on the nose, and quickly divert their attention to something positive. They will be much more willing to comply, and even "old dogs" can learn new tricks that way.
Dogs are smart. People need to be too.

I think beating animals is a horrible thing to do. It doesn't work except to get the animal to be afraid of you, and in the end it causes the animal to go wild, and maybe hurt someone.
Dogs (an animals in general) are alot like people and they need to be taught not to make mistakes. Beating doesn't teach them anything except that violence is okay. It takes patience, and loving to teach a dog and in the end the rewards are the loyalty and unconditional love.

I don't have to beat my dogs. I don't hit them at all. I hold them by their snout, and scold them. They usually get the point, but we trained them well as pups, so they don't do many things that are wrong as adult dogs.
