could sharks lead to the cures for cancer?

Sharks, in their 400 million years on earth, have shown an extraordinary ability to resist cancer and other diseases. This has raised hopes among medical researchers that the oceans' most feared predator might turn out to be the cancer patient's best friend. Investigators continue to study the immune system of sharks to see if it can provide the answer to stopping the spread of cancer in humans. http://www.thatsweird.net/facts10.shtml

Omg! The irony..*falls over laughing* I really do hope that the cure for cancer lies in sharks..it'd be really cool. It'd be something else I'd be able to admire the big deadly pretty things for. Now, what if they CAN'T duplicate it and they turn out having to do gene therupy -- using shark genes? I wonder what the side effects could be. *ponders*

that means sharks will be in the experimental laboratories along with mice, I hope this doesn't mean a huge slaughter of these dangerous but nonetheless living animals. Whilst it would be a great feat of science to have a cure for cancer, I hope the cure doesn't come at a high price

this is terrible and you should not copy my friends posts. My friends write their own answers and they take time to really read and think about what they say. I do not appreciate your disrespect to me or my friends and it is against the rules here as well.

I wish they could get an ingredient that you could give in a shot that would prevent it forever. It would be wonderful to know that noone would have it anymore, ever.

In my opinion, we would do better to live healthier lives and avoid the activities that cause cancer in the first place. Many unhealthy practices lead to the possibilities of getting cancer. It is backwards for people to continue to disregard their health and expect new found cures to save them down the road. This is the reason that the entire health care system in the US will eventually fail as millions more get older and because of non healthy living become sick with cancers and numerous other debilitating diseases. The costs will be beyond our ability to pay.

It's really very interesting to read that sharks seem to have some sort of a natural immunity to cancer! I wonder how long it will take medical science to figure out if there is a way to reproduce the part of a shark's immune system that we would need in order to help us to become immune to such diseases? Cancer is such a wide spread disease, since it has so many forms. I would really love to see a cure for it brought to light! ^_^

I agree shywolf. I just heard recently that girls ages 11 and 12 can now start getting a vaccine to prevent cervicle cancer. If sharks have something we don't then I'm sure medical science will get it going. The one I just metioned is the first one to be released. I have 3 girls with all types of cancer in my family and I would love for them to not have to fight this terrible thing in their life.

Interesting factiod. Shark cartilege is already in use to help heal arthritis. I just hope this discovery does not desimate the oceans of sharks. Something else for the clonning list! I think the best idea would be to raise them in tanks if this research leads to a cure for cancer.

Actually, I've either read this one in a magazine or seen this on TV about a year ago. I would be glad to know if they already found a solution to this plague that has terroried the whole world. Cancer has been with us since time immemorial and no cure has yet came out. Chemotheraphy has only relieved us for some time but it does not really get rid of the disease. I sure do hope that sharks could shed some light how they resist this dreadful disease. It would make their image good if they do so.

If we could get the cure without killing the poor shark then I would be all for it. It is no stranger than some of the cures coming out of the amazon forest. I am heading for the cancer trail with my smoking so anything that can help get rid of it is most welcome.

i think for the way the world works it could be possible. everything that was put on this earth was made for a reason. sometimes things like sharks could be the cure to something awful. everything has a purpose on this world and in due time we will start finding them out one by one.

Cobra venom was part of the cure for polio, and the venoms of other creatures have been used in cures for other diseases--I see no reason why Sharks shouldn't be used for cancer.

Fascinating, simply fascinating. Who knows where future generations may find answers to problems that our generation thought were unsolvable. I do hope that all concerned with research into the shark phenomena will proceed with caution and not harm this vital link in the food chain.
