Would anybody purchase a bird from a place like PetSmart or Petco?

I have bought 2 birds from Petco. The birds were healthy except they have no clue on the breeds they carry. I bought a Red Lored Amazon and they said it was a yellow headed amazon. So if you do buy from these places be sure to study breeds.

I would never buy an animal from petsmart or petco!! They increase the prices way too much, and the birds are not socialized too much.. You would be better off getting on from a breeder or from a small, private owned pet shop. They tend to spend more time with the animals, and they aren't pricey. I got my Sun Conure from a small pet shop, and only paid $299.00.. Sun Conures at petsmart and petco start around $400 or more........

you can, but if you do your likely to be paying an outrageously inflated price.
you would do better with a breeder.
also..try checking with your fairgrounds sometimes they hold "bird expo's" where vendors and lots of breeders come a couple of times a year. not only can you get some fantastic prices, but the ppl you deal with there specialize in parrots. they know what they are talking about and are not just "some kid hired for the summer" like at the pet stores.

I would prefer to purchase from a private individual if possible, simply because I think the birds are better cared for and you can find more personal details of where the bird comes from, personality, etc. But I wouldn't say I would not purchase from a store like Petsmart or Petco. These particular stores are very clean and offer a great deal of information, advice and products to help you and your new pet.

i think it's best to buy from a breeder; you don't know if the petshop's birds have been exposed to disease. no, i'd never buy a bird from there.
