What if your friend borrowed money from you and doesnt want to pay you back?

I had a friend once from my previous work who owed me money. She was a single mom and during the time that she borrowed money from me, she said that it's because her child has no more milk and since our payday were still a week away, she really needed cash. I didnt think twice and lent her the money, with her promising to pay me back when we get our salary. But payday came and she didnt pay me back. I was a bit shy of asking her for it because i was waiting that she return it without me asking for it. Days and weeks came but she still she didnt return the money. It would have been ok with me but the amount i lent her was not that small and what i didnt like was that she promised me that she would pay me back. Finally, when i asked her for it, she begged me to give her time because she needs money and she doesnt have enough to pay me yet. Several months have passed since that and yet there is no effort or indication from her that she still wants to pay. What should i do? SHould i just forget about it or should i demand that she return it to me immediately?

I would ask her to make an attempt to start paying back. If she doesn't make an effort after that, it goes without saying never to lend to her again. My feelings on lending money regardless of need and the promise of paying back is to never lend what you can't afford to get back. If someone asks for x amount and you can afford to kiss it good-bye then lend it, if not don't. That is my 2 cents worth. Good luck to you here at mylot!

For me personally, I would probably have to let it go, because I would feel too shy to be that demanding of someone in person. For you, you will have to decide if the money is important enough to you to confront this person again. I really do not know if she has the means to pay you back or not, but I think that it is awful of anyone to borrow money and then not even say anything for months, and only beg off of paying it back when they are finally questioned. I realize that she doesn't have much to live on, but if I borrowed from someone I would certainly be trying to pay them back in small increments or at least keeping them updated on when I thought I could pay them back. :( I wish you good luck in getting your money back.. I really feel bad for you, especially if it was a lot of money :(

thanks!! actually, the reason why it took months before i asked her about it is because im also shy to ask her for it. If she at least tried to pay me back in installments or at least tell me to give her more time, i would have gladly obliged. But no, she now even avoids my calls because she knows that i'll just be asking her for the money. It's really sad that i even considered her as a friend and she would do that sort of thing to me.

It's up for you to decide whether forget it or demand to return the money..If I were you forget it..just think that you can help others that is important..I know that you work hard forthat money but there's a lot of money will return to you if you do good things to your fellow human beings. just always think positive., and god will do the rest..

Are you sure it's that she doesn't want to pay, or is that she truly can't pay? If she just doesn't want to pay then she's not a real friend and she's using you. If she can't pay, then you shouldn't worry about it. Your friend was in trouble and you helped her out. If you need that money so bad then you shouldn't have lent it to her in the first place.

Well, when she borrowed the money from me, she promised to pay me back on payday which was a week away so i thought that it's ok since i have budgeted my money then to last until payday. I think that she really doesnt want to pay me back because she'not unemployed and i heard that she even bought a new cellphone..
