I'm tired of reporting abuse. Does it really change anything?

When I'm on any site I take the rules seriously, mostly because I've seen what can happen when too many people break the rules. It can eventually destroy a site. So I've reported a lot of abuse since I've been here, mostly "discussions" that are nothing but a come-on for referrals. But I see discussions that I reported days ago still going strong. How do I know? Because I always downrate them, and that orange Rated! tells me that I've already reported them.
So, does myLot staff actually look at abuse reports? Do they do anything about it? If not, why bother? What's your experience with reporting abuse?

i have never reported abuse as i am quite new here..i saw my star go down from a nine to an eight..but i think thatwas cvos for a few days i was too ill with my tooth to do much posting..i try not to ever tick anyone off..i mod on a private forum so i get where your coming from..but i am a gentle mod lol..i always give peope a first chance and gently try to nudge them in the right direction..maybe you shpuld pm the abusers first and let them knkw that they are getting a bit wild?

yangi (I hope you don't mind my shortening your name), if you don't leave a comment, there's no way the person will know who reported them or downrated them. I know it might not seem fair to report someone and not tell them, but the people who do that are often experienced members, so I have to believe they're doing it deliberately rather than because they're new and ignorant of the rules. That kind of person will downrate you for pure revenge. So I don't leave comments. I've experienced this on other sites--letting a person know that they're violating the TOS, and gotten nothing but grief for it.

I'm new to MyLot so I don't know what a come-on for referrals means... Are you reporting abuse because the content is ridiculously offensive or because you don't agree with the opinion that's posted?

I would never downrate or report someone for an opinion I don't like. I do it for violations of mylot's rules. One of the big no-nos is starting a discussion just to get people to use you as a referral on another site. They get credit for their referrals, just the way you would get credit here if people sign up under your ID and then are active on the site. Discussions are for starting conversations. If you read the guidelines, you'll see that there are quite a few ways you can get your discussions and posts deleted. Welcome to myLot. I'm pretty new here myself, and it can be very enjoyable once you know the ins and outs.

Thanks for letting me know. I glanced through the guidelines (I'm sure like a lot of users, no one reads the terms of use well enough to be tested over them) but I think I have the moral decency not to post anything offensive. There are probably many variables as to why you don't see instant results. Just know that you did the good thing by reporting!

Speaking from experience, myLot definitely investigate all abuse reports. I have reported lots of members for abuse and when I went back and checked, their responses or comments had been removed. Keep reporting them. Sometimes it may take a while before myLot will take action, but they more we report the abusers, the better the site will be, and I am sure myLot will appreciate all the help they can get.

It's good to know that. I'm willing to take time away from commenting, but not if it's just going to waste my time. I know that admins are often overwhelmed, so I'll just try to be patient.

I encountered some spamming when I was new here, some of the abuse that I reported are taken cared of by Mylot admin. In fact there's this one member that actually created two profiles then answered each from his other discussions and rated them, even marked it with best response. A friend of mine told it alerted us about this person and we all reported him so he got kicked out on this site.
You have to understand that Mylot already have 66,000 plus members and reports come to them every minute, I'm sure they would take care of it after they've monitored these culprits..

two username accounts by just one person? it's nice that mylot moderators acted on that guy. that's so rude of him to do. but he's not clever enough! more mylot members here are more clever than him because it was them who caught him doing that!

I am a little confused, and also a bit new here. i have read the guidelines, and if I'm not sure about something, I read them again. You sent me an e-mail and said that a discussion I started in frugal living was against the rules. It was a link for a free tube of toothpaste.
I see lots of other discussions for free samples, but yet mine was deleted. Why is that? If I did something wrong, I would like to know so I don't do it again.
Please point out the specific guideline that says you can't do that, because I certainly don't see it. I'm an honest person, and to have someone accuse me otherwise makes me a bit angry as you can imagine. I'd much rather you tell me why it was wrong so I don't repeat the problem.

well i do always rate minus sign to those who have a bad discussion and poor and one liner response.
i reported once about this one user who respond to my discussion with irrelevant opinion about the topic and i reported him using the ! at the right side and the next time i log in and check that discussion he is gone. so iguess mylot admin do there job.

i dont think reporting sites bout referring is good, i mean it is just topic, i think the only discussions needed to be reported are the ones like abusing, using nonsense bad words, or who does not respect for other users. Mylot gives liberty for making discussions for whatever ppl wants, even if it is dumm or unnecessary. Maybe ppl likes some discussions you dont.

Nagareru, maybe this is a good time for you to read the guidelines. They're at the bottom of every page. Starting a discussion to get referrals *is* abuse. The 3 on your star ought to be telling you something important.

I think mylot does look at the discussions that we report and then I think they go view them themselves and decide whether or not to shut the discussion down. I've reported a few discussions in my past and I've seen them all removed within a pretty short time.

I couldn't agree more! I have no qualms about reoprting pointless discussions as abuse because they are there for no other reason than to make money. Very often these people don't even make ONE comment on any discussion and then hope to be able to gain lots of referrals for other sites! No chance!
Also, I an't believe that people would get paid for a comment like "Yes" on a discussion as I have several times seen. For example " do you like to travel by train?" andswer - "yes" ker-ching, money earned - it's ridiculous

I hope they do look into the reports. In the hot topics right now is a discussion about someone plagerizing and writing lots of nonsense posts. It would be a real shame if people are earning for that mindless, cheating stuff while some of us are making a genuine effort.

you probably report abuse just because you dont like what someone may say about you. but get with the program thats not the way it works! people are entitled to their opinion about you whether you like it or not!

Maybe you should go back and read what I said. I was talking about spammers and people who break the rules in various ways. Nobody has ever said anything about me that I objected to, and I certainly wouldn't report them unless it was obscene or something like that.

I always report abuse also. If people aren't informed of what they're doing wrong how can they ever get better.
I agree that they need to give people some kind of direct feedback on what things they're doing that is ruining it for everyone else.
Yahoo answers sends the abusers email telling them the nature of the abuse. I'm not sure if mylot does or not.
After they accumulate so many abuses which yahoo investigates they disable the account.

There was only one topic that I had seen that I had considered reporting , it was late the night I had seen it and I figured I would wait til the morning . When I got up , someone must have reported it already as it was gone .
I know both my sister and I messaged MyLot when we joined the site and no one got back to us yet .
I figure they are keeping an eye on us but they are probably busy and will get around to it eventually .

I like this site a lot, but would really like to see them post a link to the rules.
How does one report abuse?
Is it that little red envelope up top by the heading?
There is one person who questions always are about things like beastiality, I don't think it is appropriate, maybe if it was one question but it is a theme. I would like to see quality discussion on here.

I am not sure if they've done anything better from two years back, but I suppose that they have in a way. I do also think that even though people are reported that some person can go back and start the same discussion out of stubbornness and anger. As for the anger part, I am sorry that I was a bit angry on my response to you on my discussion. I know that's off the topic but i do truly feel bad. Have a wonderful day!
Keep reporting people though, I know I do from time to time and it does help sometimes.

I don't think you can have access to that kind of private information :) But I do believe that reporting abuse affects someone's earnings. Just like how rating something positive seems to affect someone's earnings positively - which is why I always rate up people who comment on my discussions :) in order to somehow help them and as a thank you :D
Thanks for the comment on my discussion!
