What is the difference between a core duo and a core 2 duo processor

I have noticed that in a lot of the newer laptops and desktop computers some of them offer an intel core duo processor while some others offer an intel core 2 duo processor. Can someone tell me the difference between the two ?

aiguy01 Core 2 Duo is a second generation dual core architecture. Intel switched to a smaller die mask making the chips faster. Cache size increased also. They also redid some of the motherboard support chips further optimizing performance. Speed difference...
