Gas and Kittens!!!!!!

We had the strangest thing happen early this morning. I woke up to roll over at 3:00 am, and I smelled gas. Now my room is the furthest from the kitchen, so I jumped up in a panic. Good thing to! Apparently, my new kitten has learned to jump real well, and the nearest I can figure, she jumped on the stove, kicking the knob to light the stove. However, it did not go over far enough to catch the electric igniter, so gas was just pouring out! The house was full of it! So I flipped the thermostat off on the heater, and got everyone out of the house. After we put the girls in the car, hubby and me ran in and open all the door and Windows! It took an hour before we went back in. I am still freaked about it. I know if the heater had kicked on, the house would have exploded! Yes friends, I had a near death experience this morning, at least as close as I would ever like to come to.
So as to my question...
Anyone looking for a kitten that can jump well?

That is so scary! Thank goodness you woke up and smelled that gas. I would suggest you buy a set fo those childproof stove knob protectors. I bought some at a baby store (Ithink Babies R us) when my kids were toddlers. That way kitty won't be able to turn the knobs on. She's too cute to get rid of...(:

Oh I am so glad that u woke up and smelled the gas, however coffie would have been nicer=)
It is scary to think about what could have happen. Gas can kill even without exploding.
I also have a gasstove in my apartment and i love it since i love cooking on it. but every time i have kids over I check it like a million times =)
I am glad that u and your family is ok, and maybe u should get some "children-safes" on the buttuns if you are going to keep thecat =)

I have decided to take the knobs off until I use the stove. At least until we get an electric one. I have been wanting one for sometime for the savings, electric seems cheaper than gas. The girls just informed me not to get rid of the cat but get rid of the stove, LOL.

The children are quite right .. the cat simply didn't know that those handy looking hanging on places were in fact going to let loose a house full of gas .. I would never blame a pet for this kind of accident .. I suppose in reality 'we' should know better than to leave 'any' animal in 'any' place where accidents could happen .. but we can't think of everything .. and as kitty grows up a bit more then he/she won't be doing so many things in the home ..

That was hairy. Can you just close the door and keep the cat out of the kitchen? An adorable little muffin like that will be hard to part with and it really was a fluke kinda thing that probably couldn't happen again in a million years...Glad you and your family are okay.

Nope, no doors, infact two entrances to the kitchen and no doors for either one. I noticed she has been jumping here lately, never had a cat jump on the stove though. I clean the kitchen before bed, so there was no food out. Can't figure out what she was thinking.

Sunshinecup, your kitten is adorable! But oh my goodness, about what happened to you! It is such a blessing that you were awakened when you were and that you noticed the gas in time to take care of things! I'm so glad that you are safe!

Well that really isn't her, looks just like her, but she has horns, LOL.
I tell you, thank goodness I am not a sound sleeper. I toss and turn all night long, I will never complain about that again.

In the coal mines, methane was called "fire damp" it only required low concentrations to reach explosive potential.

hold up sweetie - methane is not toxic 'per se' but it can displace oxygen to the point that there is not enough oxygen for breathing and you asphyxiate - while explosive levels are reached first there have been plenty of methane asphyxiations.
these are some lucky people all the way around

WOW!! That is pretty scary sunshine! The Lord was definately looking over you and your family today. Thank Him for that.
I am thankful that the only thing my cat jumps onto (other than the bed or the couch) is the dining room table. She will get up on one of teh chairs then up onto the table. I cannot get her to stop doing that. Oh, well, it's better than the stove...

Oh sunshine! That is a scare. My cat is a problem jumper too! I keep squirt bottles handy to shoot her with water anytime she jumps up where she is not suppose to be. I don't want her on the counters or the table. I actually got a good night's sleep last night due her being shut out of the bedroom. Maybe if you put her in the bathroom with something like her toys and something to sleep on then she won't be up on the stove. I have a large collapsable kennel for my dog that I am considering putting the cat into to keep her out of trouble and so that I can get some sleep. The dog isn't a problem. There are also many products on the market to curb animals from jumping up where we do not want them. I even throw soft objects at the cat if I don't have a squirt bottle handy. Maybe some nerf balls around the house might help and it will help you relieve some of the stress!

I bet that is funny to see her jump at the ceiling fan! I hope you remember where you put the knobs......It isn't like you can leave them on the top of the range or counter. The cat will find them and play with them and then.....like magic.....they disappear! Now where are my keys? Darn cat!

Thanks for the idea, but she can't handle being locked in a room, with lights, a bed and toys. She freaks out and will meow all night long. I think taking the knobs off the stove will help until she gets over her jumping. It's a new thing for her, she even walks in the center of the room and tries to jump up at the celling fan. Funny to see.

WOW! I am so glad you woke up in time. Now I know why I never buy gas stoves. I have always had a fear of someone leaving it on and we blow up. I wonder if you can take the knobs off the stove before you go to bed. That might keep your kitten from turning it on.

Thank God there were no mishaps! That's the thing about life..events happen when you least expect them. Take care Sunshine..

So happy you are all safe and sound. Just to think what could have happened!! You and your family had a guardian angel watching over you. Puppies and kitten are just like having little kids around they are into everything.

That was way too much of a close call Sunshine. I'm glad you, your family, and the kitten are alright. I read one of the comments you made about what your kids said, and I agree. Keep the kitten and get rid of the stove! LOL Your kitty is just too adorable.

wow! chances are you would have been safe, but yes a good thing you turned off all the electrics, and didn't switch the light on in the kitchen or your bed room did you? :) Gas is a heavy gas, so it drops to the floor, and hovers like a carpet.
The scent or odour is an additive, because people couldn't smell gas, because gas is odourless, so the put an odour in it so we know when there is a leak :)
Bad kitty, may it would be safe to lock him out of the kitchen or teach him to cook! Kittie Oliver watch this space :)
Glad you and your family and kitty are all right though.

Okay, you need to learn how to take care of a kitten first of all. I have three cats, and none of them have ever done that because I will not let them. Having a kitten or a cat, is like being a parent, you have to pay attention to it like you would your children. People these days. All so lazy and ignorant. You knew the responsibility of owning a cat when you got it, and now you want to get rid of it because you cannot handle the responsibility. Would you do that to your own child?

Keep the kitten as close to you as you can at all times. Remember that cats are like children and they need boundries and they need to be looked after and told what not to do.

I think she was kidding about getting rid of the cat. It sounds more like she was trying to voice some pent up anxiety and just needed to vent.
I would not go so far as to call others lazy and ignorant because they don't know all the facts of caring for an animal. Kind of hard aren't you? Let us play nicely here now!
Do you have any reccomendations for her that might help her out?

Rogue-
Carring for a child and carry for a cat are not the same. Children refuse to eat the darn Kitty Mix or use the litter box correctly. They always seem to want to build sand castles in it.
loujac3-
Yes some people have never heard of the word, "humor" and it shows.

oh that would be scary! If you had not gotten up in time soemthing really bad could have happened! Are you going to start putting the kitten in a room at night so she cant jump on the stove? That would be the safest thing to do

WOW! This is so scary!
I remember that I learned once about gas, that when you smell it, you should not turn the light on, because your house can be explode.
It's so great that gas has a powerful smell, and if you woke up from it, means that there was a lot of gas in the house.
I hope that you will be more caution next time, so things like that won't happen to you.
God bless you!

That was scary Sunshine! I'm glad to know that you and your family are alright. Your ability to not panic and at the same time knowing what to do is something I truly admire. :) I for one have trouble staying calm during emergencies.
I too have cats and kittens, which are all really playful. So I keep them in the garden outside the house. The "suspect" is cute, but I think some kind of punishment must be made due for mr./ms. suspect.
