Why is it that Lion is considered the king of the jungle? male lion weighs between 150–250 kg while male tiger weighs between 200-320 kg.

I think that lion is considered the king cuz of it hair on the neck, looks like a "crown", and lion's roar is so much louder then tiger's roar.

"Mane" is what they called the hair on the neck. thanks! that is more likely the reason..

Lions travel in prides...or gangs so they multiply their killing force several fold. Tigers are lone killers so they have not so much punch as a gang. Hense less punch, less status. Just guessing here, there could be another reason...

yes! why shouldn't lion be called 'king' when he has subordinates (i've seen on tv lionesses look for prey) while a tiger hunts alone.

Tiger - Tiger and baby tiger
It's not perhaps the weight that matters. May be its fierceness or may be its the beauty of the face. Lion is perhaps more dignified to look at LOL!

If it comes to weight...surely Tigers, on average, grow larger and stronger than lions. However, among mammals, they are hardly the most powerful pound-for-pound.If we consider strongness as a basis for king selection, then reward goes to Ant.The ant can lift 250 times its weight. Its more than any mammal can lift. Lion is considered as king of jungle...may be because it does't have any enemies (as stated in one discovery programme)or because it is most magnificent animal.

lions prey consists mainly of large mammals, such as antelopes, gazelles, warthogs, wildebeest, buffalos and zebras, but smaller animals like hares and birds are also taken occasionally. Their diet consists of only about 20 different species. Carrion is readily taken and often recovered from other predators like hyenas and wild dogs. also young elephants, and hippos. while tigers eat primarily medium to large sized herbivores such as sambar deer, wild pigs, gaur, water buffalo, and domestic cattle. They also kill such formidable predators as dogs, leopards, pythons, and crocodiles as prey, and occasionally prey on creatures as small as langurs, peacocks and rabbits. Old and injured tigers have been known to attack humans or domestic cattle and are then termed as man-eaters or cattle-lifters. taken from wikipedia.org

They call it king of the jungle because of the fur from his neck that signifies crown. While the Tiger is only similar to female tiger, the only difference between male and female tiger is the size.

the "mane" or fur/hair on the neck is more likely the reason why lion is considered the king of the jungle. thank you for responding.

If you have seen the animation movie by Disney which is entitled "THe Lion King", you would basically understand as to why lions are called the King of the Jungle. They seem to be like a royale family because lions live in pride. Male lions are the Kings because they just have to sit down under the heat of the sun. It's the lionesses who do the hunting for them. And if you try to look at a lion, they seem to be tough and they roar so hard. Hope this helps :)

yes, i figured that one out. what is a king if he has no subordinates.. to do the 'nasty' things. ..tigers hunt their prey alone. ..Lion-O of 80's "ThunderCats"
