Ok, I have a ferret, but unfortunately, I do not have an animal doctor for her yet, I know that sounds terrible! however after talking to other ferret owners, they have pretty much given up on their Vets anyways! So, what is going on? Well, being from Phoenix, there was only 1 Vet that would even see a ferret! and she killed the ferret she saw, luckily, we still have my dear seva, well anyways, do any of you have this problem with finding a reliable vet?

Go to a good ferret website, and look for a ferret club or even a ferret rescue in your area. Better yet, I've got a book here about ferrets, it's a few years old though, and not sure how close you are to these. But try them out, they should be able to recommend a good vet!!

Hopefully one of those guys are still in operation and can help you out!!
I understand what you're going through though. We just moved from FL, and down there all the vets saw all kinds of animals. Here where I'm at now, most of the vets only see dogs/cats. Have to go to a "pocket pet" vet for my rabbit & ferrets, & another vet for my parrot. It depends on what kind of training they do afterwards. Kinda sad really. And, it really sucks lol.
Good luck!!

oh man! I live in UT now, LOL! However, there are a few on the list I had contacted, back when I was looking at adoptions. the one Sharon Tucker has. How funny! we were looking at a white albino, well, I was anyways, and I don't know, my husband I guess, is just not used to adoptions! LOL! So, I am gonna slowly break him in, no problem!

Wow, I feel lucky with my vet! I have a wonderful exotics vet who looks after my reptiles, ferrets and birds. My Strider bounced back from cancer with the help of our vet who was just wonderful. There are a few vets in my area that handle exotics - I'm just two hours away from you, actually - and I'm very happy with mine.

Dr Skinner, at the Prescott Animal Hospital. It's on Iron Springs road. It's a bit of a drive, a couple hours out of Phoenix - it generally takes me a little less than two hours to get to Phoenix from Prescott, but it's a wonderful vet hospital with a great staff of professionals who range from horse care to small exotics. I wish i could direct you to one closer!

Utah? After I typed all that out for AZ...lol. Pick up this book called Ferrets for Dummies by Kim Schilling. Great book, has everything and anything you need to know about ferrets. Gives disease symptoms, cures for small ailments and injuries. That'll come in handy if you don't find a vet. There's 2 listings for Utah:
Ferret Shelter of St. George
sunruh@infowest.com
United Ferret Organization
Sandy, UT
uferreto@srynet.com
Good luck!!

I have always taken my exoctics to specifically exotic vets. I am lucky however, I live in Indiana, about a half hour away from Purdue University, which has an awesome veterinary program, and therefore a veterinary hospital on campus with lots of experts. So if the usual vet doesn't have the answer, a lot of times they will.

I feel your pain with trying to find a good ferret vet. It can be very difficult!
I got lucky when I brought my ferrets in to a general vet clinic a few years ago and the vet assistant pulled me aside and told me that she has ferrets, but even though she loved her job and felt the vets she worked for were wonderful with dogs and cats, she had found a specialist for her ferrets and took them there when they needed veterinary help. She gave me the vet's info and I started taking my gang there.
Over the years, this vet has provided care and maintenance for my ferrets. He's over an hour away, but it was always worth the trip. Three of my ferrets have needed surgery over the years and he saved their lives.
Since I'm in Maryland, that doesn't help you much, I know. But one thing I did find helpful before finding this vet was to read up on ferret illnesses and ailments myself and print and take the resources with me when I had to take my ferrets to vets who weren't as experienced with them.

I don't know any vets in the states, or the regulations on keeping ferrets, but I had to respond coz ferret is my dad's nickname and he hates it! haha. But he is sooo tiny compared to the rest of us! lol
I know in the UK that our vets see a lot of ferrets (i know this coz I always see someone with a ferret when I go to the vets with the dogs).
Sorry can't be more help.

Congratulation on owning your ferret they make wonderful pets. Please keep in mind a female ferret needs to be mated or recieve injections to keep them out of season as their hormones continue to build in their system and they will die .We have owned ferrets for a lot of years and have never taken them to the vets there is no need just make sure they do not become over heats in the summer time and she will be fine they love bottles of water that have been frozen they will lie on them to stay cool and they love to swim in the bath tub

Wow I am so sorry you dont have good ones. Have you tried calling neighboring towns/cities and see if they treat exotics such as ferrets? I live close to the university of georgia and they treat ferrets too.
I hope you find a good one. I used to rescue ferrets and I love them very much. I had a very good vet but it took a long time to find him. Good luck,Hun!

You know, one of the most wonderful things I have noticed about ferrets is the wonderful compassionate owners who care for them, there are always exceptions to the rule, but I have noticed how much sincere ferret owners (and there has got to be a better term, just can't think of it)care about their pets! When we first got our ferret, I thought, geez! kinda expensive for a little ball of fur, I had no idea that the little tike would make up for that 1000 times in love! She really did 'weasel' her way into my heart, definately worth it.
