How would you know if your lover is an abusive person behind a gentle facade?

During courtship, most individuals put their best foot forward in order to win the heart of the other person. What indicators do you look out for? Tell tale signs?

As Gharinder said, decency is the most imp. for what one should look. His behaviour with other with loved ones,friends,relatives & people interacting day ti day life, indicates what personality he has.

Most of the time you won't be able to tell until it's too late. The movie "Sleeping With The Enemy" showed that in blistering detail. I have been lucky so far. The guys that I have dated or gotten into a relationship with have all stayed the same once things got serious. As far as signs, look for odd tantrums or things that set them off - usually small things that they treat like it's the end of the world.

ofcourse decency is most important i looked for a caring loving husband that are most important otherwise one's life will become a hell

Not sure whether I can qualify to answer this question as I've had two so I obviously couldn't tell! One big tell tale sign is if they are cruel in their ways - Especially against animals - I'm not saying that anyone who doesn't like animals is an abusive person but if they are willing to persecute a defenseless animal are they really going to think twice about persecuting a person?
