We are on property and no gets past the bridge without our dogs sounding the alarm. If I am home I go out and see who and what they want. Am 1000 feet off the road so they normally are expected. I tell everyone to call first.
If in the city then a peep hole for the door would be imperitive. Asking who it is shows that someone timid is inside and that would tell me depending on my goal that it might be a good mark. Best if you are not expecting is to say nothing at all.

I am terrible about answering the door LOL I have never appreciated unexpected guests and I find solicitation a waste of time (if I need something, I'll call you!). Usually, if there's a knock at the front door or the bell rings, I'll go dashing to my daughter's bedroom, from where I can see the front porch, and I'll check who it is. Often, if I don't know the person, I don't answer at all. Or, if I see a car outside that I recognize, then of course I'll open the door. But I'm quite careful. Because my front door and front windows are at ground level, basically, I've caught at least one guy looking in the windows when I didn't open the door... and that freaked me out!

If i'm home alone and there is someone knocking unexpectedly at my door, i don't answer it! i live in an apartment in the basement so i'm nervous about answering it, there is only one exit! and the person who's at the door is standing in front of it. I'm a sissy!

I usually take a peek at that little hole on the door before I open it. =) Sometimes, I just peek thru the window near the door and look who is in the otherside first. =)

I look out the window and see them first. I have a hard house to enter without someone identifying. It isnt safe and my dog lets me know someone is there usually. I think my dog is the best security system I have, or could get. I think criminals think twice when they know you have a dog.

I go to my kitchen window and look out to see who is there and if I know them I will open the window and talk to them..If I don't I ask them what they want.....Usually it's someone selling something and I can tell them I don't have any money.....Close the blinds and walk away....The only time I open the door is when I want them to come in.....It's better to be safe than sorry....

Sometimes i'l open it and sometimes I'll just pretend like im not home. JUst depends if I'm dressed or not or if i feel like it. I don't think about if its safe or not. Its usually the ups man anyway.

I usually ask my husband to answer it. We live in a crappy rental house, and it only has one door - no storm door, and no window and no peep hole. So the only way to know who is there is to open it. And there are 4 dogs that want to get a peek too, so trying to hold them back is a pain.
I have a strict rule of NEVER opening the door to strangers. If I don't know you, I don't need to open the door - because you are either trying to sell me something, or convert me to your religion. So i rarely open the door unless I am expecting guests.
But if my husband wants to answer, while I hold a few of the dogs back, fine by me.

I never open my door whether I'm home or not. hahahaha no but if I'm home alone or home with husband I hate answering my door because it's always someone trying to sell me something.

I look out the peep hole and the window to see the car they are driving. I don't ask who it is because really what are they going to say?? If someone is there to hurt you they aren't going to just go away cause you asked who it is. If I have no clue who is at my door then I just don't answer it. Sometimes I see some guy and I don't know who it is.. but when I look outside I see a FedEx truck or something.. then I answer it. But without the truck, then I don't.

I have a long window almost the same length right beside my door.
So, when I look at the door, I can see who is standing there.
I also have a glass door for a screen door. This door can lock and if I do not feel comfortable, I do not open it.
But I must admit, I seem to be too trusting and open it anyways. LOL
I know, I am horrible! ha ha But, like I said, I know my downfall is that I am too trusting. But when I am home alone, I do lock my front door and I have two dogs that sound really mean. They don't like anyone even walking on the sidewalk in front of our house! LOL And the guy across the street...anytime he opens his garage door and is seen by a dog, they go into a huge protective mode.

i scream 'who is it' in my bass voice. then i demand a detail from them that only the person from the correct place would be. if it's the pharmacy, i'd ask 'which one?'. they can't answer that, forget it. 'which pizza parlor?' parent? you know their voice.
