This young man who has a mental disability was driving and killed two young children and injured several others. Should they be allowed a behind the wheel of a car? Let me know how you feel about this?

When you fill out your drivers application for a license they do ask if you have a history of mental illness, ever been in a physicatric hospital and if you take physicatric prescription medication. If they are saying he has a mental disability then he should not be driving. There are a lot of disabled people who have a physical disability that does not impare their driving but we are talking about a mental issue here.

I see your from Australia, does this mean that people in your country fill out an application for a drivers license and they don't ask if you have a mental illness?

what was the nature of his disabilty? Did the accident caused by anything in paticular? I mean disabilities can be all sorts of things, it doesnt mean they should be denied rights because of it. I think it depends on the type of disability and if they are being treated and so on.

IN that case yes he should NOT be driving. Sounds like he had some serious mental issue & I hope thats not used as an excuse for him to not go to jail for murder.

Most people who kill innocents in a car accident are of sound mind. Someone must have at some point decided that he was capable of driving a car safely if he had a drivers licence. What about drunk drivers? I think if we got behind a programme to stop them getting behind the wheel of a car the roads would be a safer place.

The fact that he has a mental disability, makes me think he has diminished capacity and therefore should not be allowed to drive and control a car. That's far too dangerous. What a sad situation though :(

if their mental disability impairs their driving, like the man in your example, then they shouldn't be allowed to drive at all. but i also believe in equal opportunity, for as long as they pass all the tests and prove that they can drive safely and responsibly, then they can be allowed.

If someone cannot pass the written or driving skills for their license to drive, then they should not. If they mentally disabled person is compentant to pass and do well, it's okay. If not, no he should not be able to drive.

Hmmm...that is a tough one. Although because of that person killing a couple children, my first thought would be that a mentally disabled person should not be allowed to drive. But we also have to remember that there are different levels of metal disability. So, I would think that the individual person should be evaluated to see if that person should be driving.

I honestly think it depends on the type of mental disability and the severity of it really...Of course there are some who are so severely mentally handicapped that giving them a license and a large metal object to operate is just a bad scene waiting to happen however there are others who are just fine...

I think it depends on the mental disability. If we just give it a blank no to all people with any type of mental disability not being able to drive alot of people will not be able to drive. How about people who are depressed, bipolar and shizoprena? They would not be able to be able to drive a car even though they may be functioning proberly. It will bring mental illness back to the dark ages where everyone hid their disease. I have bipolar. So I would never be able to drive again. I have never had the desire to kill anyone when I was behind the wheel.

i think it should depend on wat their condition is, sum shoudl be allows. most shouldn't to me thats wat it shoudl depend on, i dont think just bcuz theres sumthing wrogn with you means you cant drive, if the mental promlem isn't to bad, then sure let them drive!

If he wasn't able to control the vehicle and/or know even what he was doing then he should have not been able to drive. f he stole the vehicle though that's a different story, assuming that he didn't have a lisence.

I think that if they can take the written test and have the ability to drive, yes they should be able to. They have to take driving test just like the rest of us and if they have the understanding of it. We all have accidents and it could have been any one of us. If they have attention problems then I thnk they should have to have another adult in the car with them, jst to help. They ave to live also.
