I was a competitive swimmer for 16 years. It was my life and I enjoyed it. But now, I am paying the price for all those long hours training in and out of the pool. My shoulders are so messed up. I have had 3 shoulder surgeries and looking at a possible 4th in the near future. Do any other swimmers have this problem?

Don't get me wrong, swimming is great for you but understand that I swam on average 6 hours per day (3 in the AM and 4 in the PM). I averaged approximately 15000 yards per day.

I'm so sorry to hear about your condition. The most common ailment of a swimmer that I know are ear infection (I had this once) and skin diseases (fungi). Actually swimming helps me ease the pain of my scoliosis (abnormal curvature of spine), I'm not sure about the scientific explanation but I suppose it has to do with stretching my spine when I swim.
