Torture

i know that this is going to unsettle som of my friends here, but if someone did something bad to one of your kids, family, wife, etc. could you (if given the opportunity) torture that person (i mean as an alternative to the death sentence), if the law left it up to the family members to decide and execute the punishment on a rapist, molester, or murderer, not manslaughter (accidental), (giving that killing is against god's law religiously) would you have the stomach to torture (pull nails/teeth out, scar, Brand with iron, etc) i know this seems sick but i was asked this question recently, and i answered "yes, for my kids, family, YES", i'm just wondering how many other people think like this. Before i had kids it would have been "maybe" but now, i can't stand to think of anyone damaging them, so without a doubt yes.

It's a tough hypothetical situation, really. A part of me says yes, and a part of me says no. Yes, because I believe we all deep down cling to the old 'eye for an eye' adage of justice. No, because I've been through FBI and law enforcement training, and my rational mind says that revenge of that sort is useless and pointless and doesn't actually make a person feel better. So I really can't say yes or no, honestly.

Your opinion really matters to me, as i have be call sick in this discussion with my friends, but i really think that given the opportunity, i couldn't kill but i could seriously do a lot of damage to the hypothetical person (pertaining to my children, family), thanks for the response

Yes I would... but I would not use the same methods than you mention. If you can pull the nails out of someone... I would question what sort of a person you are. It certainly does not make you a better person than a rapist. A civilise person would not have the stomach to apply that sort of torture... no matter how much they hate that person. However... you can inflict just as much pain to someone without using those barbarian methods.

Thank you for your reply, I didn't necessarily mean only by these means, i meant inflict serious unbearable pain on another person as punishment.

As much as I theoretically agree with this "an eye for an eye" concept I would not have the stomach to inflict it. I could not even watch. (My father pulled a bird out of the netting around his grapes once and twisted it's neck ..killed it...because he was p*ssed off. I was horrified. It was so senseless and stupid. He can be a very cruel man...I hope it catches up with him one day) I think these barbaric acts are not treated accordingly. The perpetrators get off too freely. Besides, I think to retaliate in kind simply brings a person way down to the level of the one doing the crime.

Thanks for the reply, When it comes to my family or kids, I think i would go mad if anything happened to them, and sadly i think i would lower myself to their standards.

Great discussion and if it was legal then absolutely YES! I'm sure that it would stop them doing it again too! - not like the handslaps and the cushy prison sentences crimals get now! Don't have to work, worry about paying bills, all their cooking done for them!?! No wonder they get institutionalised!! It would definately act as a deterrent! If someone hurt my daughter I would be more than happy to and yes I would have the stomach to do it too! I'll stand off my soap box now lol!

Yes, i believe it would be a very good deterrent, but i don't think everyone would be able to punish someone in this way, i think everyone would like to, but not be able to, thanks for the reply.
