Do you only bake pumpkin pies during the holidays?

Pumpkin Pie - My Favorite Pie
United States
February 10, 2007 12:33pm CST
This question just popped into my head. Although I love all types of pies, pumpkin pie is my hands down favorite. This pie is typically only made around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Why is that?

I don't like Pumnpkin pie, it's a texture thing with me. I love the look of it, the smell of it, but bleck... can't handle the texture. We grow pumpkins here on the ranch every year for the kids at Halloween. Some of them get to be 70 lbs. They come and pick them and have alot of fun. I think you could have it whenever you want, you can have apple pie or lemon pie whenever you want so why not?

That is a very good question as my family only makes them during the holidays as well. I have not asked them that. I never hear of anyone else making these pies during the rest of the year when there is no holidays. I assume that people think it is a holiday tradition and should only be made during the holidays. I do not feel there is anything wrong with having it anytime else throughout the year.

Pumpkins are harvested around that time so they are commonly used! I make pumkin since it is a favorite of my kids, I make apple crumb topped pie since that is my hubby's favorite. Have a can of cherry pie filling out so I can make a pie this weekend. During cold weather is the time of pies if not cake that we have for our birthdays.

I prefer a pie for my birthday rather than a cake! People think I am crazy when I tell them this.

I bake pumpkin pie all year around, because I just love pumpkin pie.My husband likes it to.The reason why most people make it around thanksgiving and christmas is because that is when you can fine the pumpkins. The can pumpkin is not as good as the real pumpkins.

I try to make pies as a birthday gift. My nephew requested pumpkin for his. His wife thought he was nuts. I guess it runs in the family!

I love Pumpkin Pie. Everyone in my family thinks I'm weird lol. It's also my favorite type of pie. I usually eat it around Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I think the main reason it's only made around these times is because Pumpkins are a seasonal item available only in fall and winter. They don't sell canned Pumpkin all year round, so people usually can't make it during the spring or summer. It's a shame. I wish we had it all year round.

Wow! You must not be in the US if you have never tasted pumpkin pie! Where do you live? I have successfully baked pumpkin pies in Spain and Ukraine; the ingredients were all available. I'm going to post some pictures of a pie I baked in Ukraine about 14 months ago.

I'm one of the weird people that bakd pumpkin pies even when it's not a holiday. They are my favorite pie, so I occasionally indulge during the rest of the year as well.

I like pumpkin pie. My mom made one that she called a pumpkin custard that was not as strongly flavored.A lot more eggs and milk. My first husband liked the stronger more traditional flavor. I think the pie he liked best was the one that was pumpkin with molasses. I put pumkin in lots of things. I will stir a big spoonful into oatmeal and cook it, adding spices. I stock up when it is at a good price at the holidays, then I have it anytime I want it. My latest thing to do is to add pumpkin, along with extra spices to my Amish Friendship starter bread, and bake it in shallow dishes. I put walnuts on top. It is easier than pie. I also will bake just the pumpkin pie filling in ramekins, serve with whipped topping.

The best part of pumpkin pie is the filling. I made a dessert that does not have crust and it was a big hit.

And their lucky if I even do that. IM not that good at baking pies and I dont know why. Alot of the times I will just buy one instead of going through that. But homemaid is much better I know. Now I want a piece of pumpkin pie.

Good question! I think it's become a Thanksgiving tradition because the pumpkins are harvested in the late fall. But these days we have canned pumpkin in the store all year, so there is no reason not to make it whenever you want it. It's one of those things that you just don't think of at any other time. Pumpkin pie is one of my favorites, also. Especially with real whipped cream.

Gotta have the real deal on top. I have used Cool Whip, but there is nothing like homemade whipped cream.

I bake pumpkin pies when pumpkins are in season, which means starting to enjoy them early in October. Of course, the Halloween jack-o-lantern, when removed from display after only 2-3 days, can be cut up and turned into pie, too. I never used canned pumpkins, only fresh ones.

I would make my pumpkin breads from fresh pumpkin. My grandmother loved my pumpkin bread best. I have made many pies using fresh too. Because I no longer have a garden to harvest my pumpkins from, I choose the canned.

I am thinking that pumpkin is only made around then because Pumpkins are harvested in the fall ( September to November) . When they are fresh like that they tend to be cheaper than a can of pumpkin. I refuse to pay for a can of pumpkin if I can buy a whole one. I like to buy extra pumpkins in the fall ,cook and freeze them. Then if I decide to make pies over the winter or in to spring the pumpkin is right there ready to be used.

I just don't have the freezer space to store pumpkin. I have strawberries and blueberries that I have picked and frozen and they take up a good chunk of the freezer. I always have a can or two of pumpkin in my pantry.

I love pumpkin pie, too! I usually only will make one for Thanksgiving but a lot of restaurants around me serve pumpkin pie all year long so I can get it any time. I like mine warm with whipped cream. Yum!

Good question. Pumpkin pie is about the only kind of pie that I will eat and strangely, I usually only want it around the holidays. I think people see it as something special for the holidays, sort of like a christmas tree. But it really shouldn't be that way. This is the second time I have heard pumpkin pie mentioned and its making me want it now. I think I will break tradition and make one this weekend.

I make pumpkin pie whenever I can find the pumpkin! October is when the pumpkins are in and I will make one from a fresh one. Other than that, I have to rely on the canned pumpkin and even then it is hard to find it out of season. I usually buy quite a few cans to see me through the year so that I can bake a pie whenever I want to.

I enjoy making pumpkin pie, I bought a pie dish years ago with a recipe for pumpkin pie on it, I tried the recipe and havent used another since. Here in Australia we dont have the Thanksging that the US have so, not many people make this kind of pie at all. Ive made it for friends and its a 50/50 response of like/dislike as its so unusual. But I dont care I love it with cream and sometimes ice cream.

Pumpkin pie to me is something made only around thanksgiving or halloween (when I have pumpkin to use up). I honestly don't know why - though admittedly in my household my husband isn't too hot on pumpkin pie so that contributes ... but it does seem to be deeply engrained in my subconscious as a holiday thing. On the other hand, the same ingredients in a bread/cake he loves and i love, so I actually use pumpkin (or pre-made pumpkin pie filling) otherwise during the year to make that - just not the pie itself for some weird reason!

I make the pumpkin pie filling fairly often and bake it in a glass dish - no crust. My daughter (15 mos) loves it as a treat, it has lots of vitamins and minerals too. I reduce the sugar in it too, so it's healthier.

I usually only bake pumpkin pie during Christmas and Thanksgiving.I love it,especially with whipped cream, but I feel that if i make it during the year,it won't be as special when Christmas and Thanksgiving roll around.
