Last week we got 4 horses that had been stolen and left in a shed with no food and no water. We work in conjuntion with the county and the local vet. Anyway the decision was made to try and save all 4. This means lots of time and effort. These horses need to be fed on a schedule so that they can become accustomed to food in their stomachs again. That meant feeding 8 times in a day.
I have really grown fond of the old gelding that was brought in. He just seemed to sense relief once he got here . Sadly I don't think he's going to make it. He has such a gentle spirit and I really wanted to him to spend at least one carefree summer in a big green pasture with plenty to eat.
He is in a nice warm barn with a soft bed of straw and shavings. Every time I go to check on them I am so afraid that I will find him dead. The vet will be here tomorrow and I guess we have a decision to make. He is just not putting on any weight despite our best efforts.
I am just so sentimental about this old fellow.

I am so sorry. This is a very sad thing. I have never understood how anyone could be so cruel to animals. It is such an incredibly awful situation. Hang in there though, you are doing good work. It is just horrible that we can't save them all but we can certainly try as hard as we can to.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!!!!!!!!
The Vet was here this afternoon. He was actually amazed that the old gelding, I have named him Camble, was actually doing better than he thought. He gave Camble 2 units of fluids and we decided to continue for at least another week. THANK GOD. I spent alot of time in the barn last night and this morning, just giving him a good rub down and lots of love. I promised him a glorious summer in the big pasture in front of our house if he would just pull through for me.
I actually got a nicker or two from him and his head goes up when we come into the barn. I have never wanted anything so bad for such a long time. He has such a gentle accepting spirit and seems like a wise old man. His younger counter parts are progressing by leaps and bounds. I have the little mare in the stable beside him and she keeps her head over the partition except when she eats. So he has company when we are not there.
So far so good. I know God looks down on all of his creatures and I thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

ANOTHER UPDATE !!!!!!
Well the old boy made it through another night and seemed a bit more bright eyed than yesterday. He seems to be replacing his fluids on his own since he did not look as gant as he has been. Hard to tell on a sack of bones though. I have seen him drinking and the out put on both ends is good. LOL. Our big concern had been the stress that he and the others under went. With that much stress horses are prone to bleeding ulcers in their stomachs, but this does not seem to be the case with any of them.
I did not know that checking poop could make a person so happy!!! Old Camble still looks like hide stretched over bone, but he does seem content. The other 3 I can tell are putting on weight, but are not ready to have the feeding schedule changed just yet.
Despite their daily grooming, they still look pretty sad, but I think it makes them feel proud. I had the farrier come out today and trim their feet alittle. They were really good for him. Their feet were very badly over grown and do not look perfect my any means, since we did not want to stress them out at all.
Maybe tomorrow I will turn the youger 3 out into the arena and they can have a good roll.
I'll keep you posted.

UPDATE ON THE HORSES FROM ONE MONTH AGO!!!
Wow time flies. The 3 younger horses are doing awesome now and are ready for easy riding. They are probably going to a couple of 4H girls that come out and help me in the barn. There sure seems to have been some bonding between the 6 of them and I feel good about letting the girls have them. Most likely all 3 will stay in our barn for awhile yet, but the girls are looking forward to taking them home soon.
The old fella is staying with me. He is doing so very well that he has suprised all of us. He is still thin but nothing that more love and good feed won't cure. He must have been a site to behold in his younger days. He is 16 hands 3 tall which is big for a quarter horse. If I look at his structure, he would have had one of the biggest quarter horse "behinds" that you could imagine. I will be starting him on some light exerise as well. Just some ground work or a walk with a halter....no riding. I would like to see some of his muscle tone come back
So this story is ending well. He will spend the rest of his days with a mixture of "retirees" as companions in a lovely green pasture in summer and a nice warm barn in winter.

Horses are a real soft spot for me. Wish I could aid him in regaining his deserved space on this planet. He might need fluids and the veterinarian might indeed be able to IV him and therefore save him. All my energies today will be for his spirit and energy force.
At the least he will have a honorable exit due to all your galliant efforts. If that is the outcome. Please keep us posted!!

Yes! Read my update at the top of the page. I have not been on mylot all day since I spent most of my time with the vet. But the old boy is getting a second chance. The vet does not think he is in any pain so we are continuing with the treatment.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It happens way too often. I commend you for trying so hard to save these animals. Especially the old boy that wouldn't have had a chance at all. I'm so glad there are people like you in the world that pour their hearts out to help these animals that can't. I work in dog rescue, and it can be very hard emotionally that's for sure. Sometimes you just want to grab some of these people and abuse them the way these animals have been abused. Good Luck tomorrow, I hope the vet has some good news. If not, at least you know you've done your very best, and you've made this old boys last days the best they could be. Again, good for you, God Bless You!!

My heart goes out to you .. I have tried to nurse a rescue animal .. it was the skinniest dog you have ever seen .. just skin and bone and little else .. yet it always wagged it's tail and was happy to see you .. even though it was a person who had beaten it and starved it ..
I couldn't do it again .. it was heartbreaking when he had to be put to sleep .. I knew it was for the best .. but he would have made a lovely dog for someone ..
Just as with your horse .. he must be thinking he is in paradise compared to what he'd been putting up with .. so be glad he is where he is .. I am sure he is loving it .. but sadly sometimes animals just feel they can't go on .. so if the worst comes to the worst .. just remember he had a very happy last few days ...

Things like this break my heart too. Has anyone ever seen the animal cruelity shows on animal planet? Such as Houston animal cops and animal precinct. Some of the things people do to animals is just unspeakable. The people who work at the non-profit organizations that help nurture these animals deserve all the credit. They give mistreated animals new and loving homes. Of course there are some cases where an animal is food agressive or something unfixable, but other wise they are so adorable and loving, and because of the one problem they can't put it up for adoption and euthanize it. I think the best you can do is to give him as much love as you can for his last days.

We actually do end up with alot of the "leftovers" so to speak. I have final say on adoption. My girlfriend and her daughter were here this afternoon and there is another gelding, much younger, that seems like he would make a great 4H horse for her.
This old old guy is staying with me!

I'm late coming in so.. I'm so glad he's doing better. Maybe in another couple of days, he to will want to take a little romp and roll. We had a horse so skinny once that we rescued it was pathetic. She had ricketts and oh god she was like a brown skeleton, it was just awful. We only had her for a month and then she went to live with a local vet. That was good for her, she was only 4 years old.
I'll keep ole cambell in my prayers..God bless us all.

Oh, Ally, you have such a caring heart! I am so moved by your story about these four horses, and I'm really sorry that you have to make such a hard decision about the old gelding who is having a hard time making it. From what you described about how he seemed to exude relief as soon as he got there, I would say that he is already eternally greatful to you for what you have provided him with. Even if it is his time to pass on, he will leave this life happy, and that I'm sure means more to him than you can probably know.
I really think that you are wonderful for helping to take care of these poor horses that were so mistreated. The world needs more people like you!

I get very angry and sad when I hear about people neglecting animals like that and then I am greatful and happy that there are people like you who make a difference and help them.
I read your updates on page 1 and I am thrilled that the horses are doing fine and that the older one is coming along so well.

I felt terrible when I read this. I really hope he will make it. I hope that his warm bed and your care and the vet's care is enough to help save him. It makes me sad. I hope you keep us posted on how he is doing. I will say prayers for him.
I was able to save a dog that was mistreated one time, and that was best feeling in the world. I don't know what it would have been like if she had not survived.
I think it would have taken me a long time to get over it for sure.
Keep us posted.

I´m having difficulties writing this without crying, believe me. If there´s one thing that brings tears to my eyes it´s cruelty towards animals.
I´m really glad that they are with you and hope with all my heart that you can save them all. Please keep posting to let us know what´s happening.
You´re not being sentimental about the gelding, you´re being human in the way we all should be.

Oh, I can never understand why people do stupid things like this. I do pray this old horse pulls through for you. From what you have wrote. It seems like you have made a connection with him and he knows he is safe. I am so glad there are caring people in this world like you.

Poor thing. Thank goodness they were found. Hopefully, the vet will have good news. It's hard not to get attached to these beautiful animals. My dad owns a few, along with my sister. My dad has one that's been around since the dawn of time, lol. All of my dad's horses are spoiled rotten.
I wish I was able to help. My family owns about 55 acres of farm land. A horses dream come true. Again I hope the vet will have good news.

I just wanted to voice my appreciation of what you do! I think you are a wonderful person and thank you for taking on this responsibility of caring for these animals that have been abused and abandoned.
I will be thinking about you and the decision that has to be made this week. I hope everything works out for the best.
Hugs!

This is a wonderful thing that you are doing. I hate to hear about the horse. It would be nice for him to have a nice summer especially with what he has been through. I used to run a horse haven and the decision that you are having to make is one that I never could make. I had to have my sister come in as a partner so that she could help making these decisions. I did save many against the vets wishes but it was very spendy and time consuming. I feel for you and please keep us all updated on this.

What a wonderful person you are. I have not had much to do with animals but since I've been a grown up and had a yard I've had a dog or cat or both. My patron Saint is Saint Francis of Assissi who was very good to animals. They all loved him and he had a special way with them. It's a gift I wish I had as well. I've taken in a few mistreated and abandoned animals; actually stole Lucy who was being neglected, starved and mistreated; she is my best friend. I just wish I could do more. I'm sitting here crying reading the stories of animal cruelty...it is so shameful what some do. Animals are not able to speak for themselves. If they try to escape cruelty they are only beaten more. I send all my charity donations to RSPCA, WWF and Greenpeace because animals can do nothing to save themselves. Only we can do that.
Please keep your chin up. The old gelding has felt the love in your heart and your compassion. Now he needs your strength. Be fierce in your love for him. Lovingly demand that he get well. There are many of us here who are behind you.
