Polymer Clay Figurines and Art Dolls

For those of you who create any type of figures out of polymer clay, do you use any type of "skeleton", like wire or aluminum foil? If so, what do you use, and what have your results been? Do you have any tips concerning this practice?

We have a new polymer teacher where I work, and she did a demo yesterday and used a little stick (like half a popsical stick) in the center of the body to help support the upper half.
