In todays world how rational is it to practice a religion?

We live in a world so different than the one that gave birth to religion. Do we or do we not need to believe in a power that we cannot comprehend? Is religion really helping us as a society or is it hindering us?

I think religion gets the blame for so many of todays wrongs with the world.Truth be known it isn't religion but people and their lack of tolerance.I am somewhat religious and have my beliefs but I never force them on anyone else and respect others their view.

yes but do you think "religion" is needed in todays society? we dont need to pray to "god" in order for our crops to grow or for aunt sally to get better. Things happen and since we are more knowledgable about our world than 1000 years ago, should we still insist on a religious approach to life?

I don't think religion should be forced on anyone but I think many people, myself included find comfort in believing there is a higher being.I do pray and am unashamed of that and I also thank God for the good things in my life.

Is religion helping or hindering us? It all comes down to personal interpretation and how you choose to use the knowledge that religion can provide. The issue with religion is that it is way too open to interpretation and that rather than use religion as a guide in life or as a means for inspiration and spiritual growth, SOME people use it to espouse hatred and incite violence against others.
In my opinion, there is no one true religion, no one true God and no one true right path to enlightenment. It is all about faith, self development and growth. Faith does not necessarily have to include comprehension! Some things in life will always be unexplainable. If human beings as a whole were more tolerant of each other's choices we would not have as many of the historical and present issues we face.
