Some People Can Be So Sensitive and Touchy!

I was just rating comments from one of my discussions that was related to smoking and my screen shot above started showing ebay auctions of different kinds of pipes. Some were very beautiful; but I don't smoke a pipe so I won't be off to buy one. However, the more they showed, the more an old memory crept back into my mind until it was once again fresh.
Several years ago my partner and I were out going from one yard sale to another. We happened upon one very large one and stopped to look around. Being from the sixties and seventies generation when we happened upon a HUGE smoking device with 6 tubes coming from it, and me being me, not one to hold back, saying out loud, "Hey, you need to turn around and check out the size of this bong!" Please note, I did not scream it. There were no children present, and my partner was standing right next to me, just looking at things on the opposite side.
She did indeed turn around and we were standing there giggling like two kids caught with our hands in the cookie jar; which we were! The owner of the yard sale pounced on me as quickly as my partner could turn around and with great anger stated: "That is NOT a BONG! That is a HOOKAH! It is used for smoking fine tobacco!" Now, she was the one that was shouting and drew several people over to the area to see what she was shouting about. It was much to our amusement when a gentleman there asked her, "How much will you take for your bong?"
We left before she could give an answer!~Donna

Sounds like someone was feeling guilty over something! ;) Bong, hookah, there isn't much difference in my mind. A hookah is just a 'legal' bong. I hope that gentleman got a good deal on it - bongs... I mean hookahs are hard to come by cheap! Oh, that's priceless! I wish I'd been there.

If ebay wouldn't have been showing me all of those pipes I would have totally forgotten about it. It still makes me chuckle a bit~Donna

OMG I was laughing as I read this. I have never heard of a Hookah but I have a bong. There are some actually sold around here but you are not allowed to call it a bong. It's a water pipe. Yeah right we all know what it is. The woman was the one who brought it on herself. If she hadn't of had the fit no one would have paid it any attention. Served her right. If she was that worried about it being called a bong she could have put a note on it that said "This is a Hookah". Sounds more like she was worried about what her neighbors might think then the law having issues with her. You know the old gossip chain of "Did you hear what she sold?" Oh well if I had been you I'd have been laughing as I walked away.

Oh that's just great!! I would definitely have called it the same thing you did; I learned the word "bong" at about five (because my mother used one) but I don't think I knew "hookah" til about a year ago. =p
And the lady did make herself look rather ridiculous throwing a fit. If she were going to correct you, she should have done it more quietly.

I just hope she made a good profit on it and that the buyer put it to whatever use he/she bought it for and is still enjoying it today. It was very beautiful ~Donna

A hookah and a bong are two different things. Actually I believe someone on here (maybe?) was talking about a hookah and I had no clue what it was. Since it had six pipes coming from it, I am sure it was a hookah, just look on http://www.wikipedia.com and search for hookah, and you will see many many pictures. I don't do that kind of stuff, but I know people that do. I think she was touchy because you were calling the thing a wrong name. Therefore, I think you should (if possible) go apologize to the woman.

I don't believe she should have to apologize to anyone. Honestly it sounds like something the lady shouldn't have been selling in the states like she was anyways.
Seriously, I'd never put anything that looked like a bong in a yard sale.
LOL!! I find your story humorous, kitchen. I think she was more guilty then she was anything.

LOL, Hookah or Bong, it is used to smoke "whatever" makes you feel good. I wonder if after she made such a big deal out of it if she sold it or not.

As was pointed out by a previous responder the Hookah was and remains a ceremonial part of Mid-Eastern culture and is not to be confused with a Bong.
I did make light of it and if it has offended anyone I must apologize; but hopefully everyone will understand that the discussion was done in humor and as a pagan kitchen witch I take the oath 'An it harm none, very seriously.

Oh my goodness this sounds like a bong to me as well I mean yoou surely would not smoke anything else out of something called a HOOKAH that sounds ridiculous and I am glad that you got yourself out of that place before they thought that you had put it there and called the police.

A hookah is different than a bong. Calling someone's culture "ridiculous" is very baised if I say so myself. If you don't know what a hookah is, look on wikipedia.

I enjoyed your story. I don't understand why she got so upset unless maybe she has a guilty consious. maybe that is what she used it for and she did not want you to think she did. Pipes, bongs they are all made the same way for the most part. This is funny. I think I would have had to tell her well you use it for what you want and we will use it for what we want.

Oh i just love garage sales...I think that lady was not use to dealing with the public and i feel she sorta made a fool of herself...Im glad however that someone picked up on her attitude and asked about the Bong hee hee.Yes some people have not got any sense of humor..

Some people are really very sensitive and touchy. And at the slighted chance they get emotionally upset and they never take anything lightly. As much as they are told and as much as they try to suppress their emotion, their emotion overpowers them easily. Actually they are not intolerant of sorts. Rather they are a bundle of nerves and emotions. Their emotional quotuent is very high. Psychologically they are built that way. Overmore, they are very very overstressed more often than not. They are more prone to suffering from chronic depression. They should be always treated and dealt with most carefully.

That is HILARIOUS! I can't believe someone would get upset about something like that! Apparently, she had had many people comment or ask about it and you were the last straw. LOL Good for that man who spoke up and asked how much the bong was. GREAT STORY!

LOL, what a wonderful story! I agree that people today are so hung up on being "Politically Correct" in everything we say or do that we lose sight of everything else. Thank you for sharing that. :)
