There is an old proverb 'The face is the index of the man'. But today, at least in a developing country like mine (india), people are carried away by thinking that 'clothes' make a man. Whats your opinion?

to me beliefs & values make the man. clothes may just make you feel better but it is what is in your heart and personality that help make you the man you are.

I don't think fashion to be important for men. If you are wearing decently clean clothes, it doesn't matter if they are not fashionable.

It’s vanity, we all want to look our best and instead of spending money on aspects that will improve our person we’ll happily flash the cash to disguise inadequacies.

I think that personal integrity, responsiblity, compassion and a general respect for humankind and the planet "makes the man"...clothing/fashion is like the pretty wrapper on a gift. If you unwrap it and open the box and find it's full of air, well, what's the point in wrapping an empty box? Sure, it looks nice...(This is not to say that we should all walk around naked, of course-it would be far too cold, at least where I'm from! :)

not the clothes its the personality which makes the man...its often seen that a well dressed man lacks some kind of personality and is not acceptable by any one...so its wrong indeed to thing that clothes makes a man inspite of personality...

If you want to talk about it, my opinion is that both are questionable dicta. But regardless of their truth, must be thoroughly designed clothes, that you can put the value of human personality. You can copy the models in magazines without fashion mistake without becoming an elegant person. True elegance is obtained from the combination of clothes, circumstances and personality of the wearer. But I believe that there is a 6th sense that tells women how to wear a dress two money on a model created by a large fashion house.
An aphorism worthy of note in this area read: "Rather than simply just a bit too loaded. "
