By support, I mean provide adequate food, clothing, housing, pay the electric and heat bills, etc. Could you and your family have a decent standard of living on this income?

Nope - to me this is just spending money for MYSELF. I would not be able to support a family on this unless I had no mortgage or other bills.

For sure! Don't people get a child allowance over there?

And let's face it...it's impossible NOT to have bills when you have a family.

How many are the members in your family. Electric bills are getting very high. They have so many additinal charges. It is hard to think how to support a family with so little income. Many live below poverty line. Stick to the basic. Spent only in important things. You can save if you can think of ways to minimize waste. You have to eat three times a day - maybe you can reduce to two times a day. Other eat only once a day. It is hard to squeeze with the little money that you have. Maybe you can ask help from you relatives who are rich. It is not good to go begging from your rich relatives.

The thing is, people shouldn't have to eat only two meals or one meal a day. It's stupid that in the "richest country in the world," so many people lack basic nutrition.

there's plenty of cheap food to be had. a jumbo bag of rice and big ol' bag of pinto beans, water, peppers, and a bit of meat is a big meal for 5 under $5. i cooked that several times in crock pots just before payday...and that fed me well with lots and lots of leftovers cuz I live alone.

Yes, it could be done. You just have to know how to make that kind of money work. Too many people are in debt these days not because they don't have enough money, but because they don't spend wisely.

No, a home computer isn't necessary. There's nothing you absolutely need a computer for. I would certainly want a computer, yes, but that's a want, not a need. If I needed to use a computer, there are free resources available to me for using one, such as a library.

It depends on who you are. If you have kids who are in school, especially high school, a computer may be a necessity. As a student, I can honestly say that using the computer at the library isn't a viable option, because they only give you 1/2 an hour at a time, you have to wait in line, and I have too much homework for that to be practical.

Spending habits are an issue, as is defining what is necessary as opposed to what is a luxury. But wouldn't you agree that certain things are necessary now that weren't in the 70's? Like a home computer?

I have seven children....no way would I be able to support my children at all with that amount of pay per year. You would not believe how much groceries we go through! 3 of them are teenagers...and the one of the younger boys and girls can eat just as much as me! As for housing....no way. Our mortgage alone would suck up the monthly income! And that would be after taxes. What about food then? What about gas to get to work? Electricity? Water? Clothes? and more? Nope...that would not work for my family.

Raising seven children must be a daunting task sometimes. It would be even harder to do it on very limited resources, I imagine.

We want for nothing we don't need....We have our medince when we need it and we go out to eat two or three times a week.......But we don't go over board......

But, once again, add two children into the equation. Could you still live on what you make now?

It's good to hear that you do help your parents. A lot of people say it's not their responsibility, and stick them in a home or something.

I definitely don't have a "blinged out" computer...my dad got a new one and let me have his old one. It's still running windows 98 (and isn't compatible with XP), doesn't have a sound card (so its entertainment value is nil), and most of the external ports on it don't work (USB, A:/ drive, etc). This thing is awful. And I'm very grateful to have it, because otherwise, getting all of my papers turned in would suck.

them two rebels in a home? LOL but seriously, i do think that a pc is required for education. however, don't buy the blinged out thing. you can buy el cheapo from the pawn shop. there are also organizations that help the low income/working poor educate kids cuz the library/school doesn't make it easy to access computers and teachers expect typed papers and online research.

For four years I had supported myslef and three children on less than that a year. I could not get any aid for me or my children because I was working full time. We lived comfortable and my kids never went hungry but they did not have all the things that their friends had. I think that it can be done, no I know that it can be done.

My family consist of me and my husband. I think things would be tight if we had an income of that. We have a about 1500 worth in bills every month not counting food and other things. But we have lived on that kind of income and we made it work.

Yes, the cost of living is definitely different across the world. Even my pitiful salary (which is around 10,000 per year) would be an enormous amount in some places. However, in the US, it's pretty tight. And if I had a family to support, it would be impossible.

Here in the Philippines $15 is equivalent to P700 pesos and no way can i survive on it, although there are some families who is very thankful to have that as long as they have money to buy a food. That is only for food excluding clothing, housing and electric billing and other expenses. Some people here are struggling for poverty and would you believe they make survive for just $2 dollars a day or least. I think for my family $15 is not a decent standard of living.

Thanks for bringing up that the standard of living is different in different countries. In some places, $15,141 US dollars a year would practically be a fortune.

Absolutely not. This is my family's monthly break down: Rent 750 water 50 gas 80 electric 100 phones 100 food 400 student loan payment 80 gas, car insurance 250 That comes to over 1,600 a month for two of us. Take that times 12 months and we need 19,200 per year to pay basic expenses, not including things like laundry soap, toilet paper, cleaning products, clothing, emergencies... It's expensive just to live in this country! Granted, I live in a more expensive place than other people, maybe, but who could raise children on that dollar amount? That's ridiculous!

Thanks for sharing your actual monthly expenses. It's a good example of what it costs to live in this country. Those are all pretty reasonable amounts. $750 for rent per month is around normal for a decent place (emphasis on decent). You can get a place for cheaper, but it'll either be in disrepair, in a bad neighborhood, or too tiny to move in. These conditions might be ok for say, a broke college student or a single. But if you're raising a family, it's just not good. Your numbers aren't extravagant in the least for someone who's about to start a family.

It depends on the size of the family. I think the average family has 3-4 people per household and if that's the case, then no $15,141 is no where near enough money to live comfortably. Could you get by? Probably. But it'd be a struggle. Those people putting together these poverty numbers have obviously never tried to live off that kind of income.

It would be pretty tight, but I could make it since I have no debt, and no family to take care of. I'd have to find a really cheap efficiency apartment, though. I'm surprised this number hasn't been adjusted since the 1970's, as someone pointed out.

Could anyone really live on only that much per year? Especially if they have a family to care for! And, a home, and bills, and groceries. Maybe.....no, I do not think that anyone could have a descent standard of living if they only have that much income!! :)

Not everyone in poverty is lazy or stupid. In fact, the majority of people in poverty stay there for only a year- because they don't like being there, so they work their a$$es off to get out. That's a really unfair stereotype.

DeadBoy, do the math: There are millions of people working FULL TIME (40 hours a week) at minimum wage jobs. They get $5.25 an hour. That's less than $10,000 a year. They are known as the "working poor." There are 33 MILLION of them in the United States.... fully employed, but below the poverty line.
