i am currently working right now in a customer service company. they pay really, REALLY good. i can buy whatever i want, and since i'm still single i don't have any financial obligations yet. but i graduated as a nurse, and i am already licensed. pls help me. when you choose a job, would you go for the money or the fulfillment of your dream? what do you think? i can't really decide, i am planning to resign on march, but here in our country nurses are not paid that much.

how about choosing both? a job that would give you a career advancement and likewise make you financially stable. who knows when are you going to need money? as what you've said you have no financial obligations at the moment so now is the best time to earn so that when the time comes, you have something to pull out in your pocket.
and lastly, no other job can make you happy if you are fulfilled with your career. make a wise move and choose both. good luck! ^_^

if the pay is good but you're not happy why stay? you weigh things that favors you. my husband took medicine in college but he's working in IT now. what everyone needs right now is not just fulfillment in career but something that would help you get the things you want in life and make life comfortable for you.
after all, the reason why we all work is not just because we love what we're doing but because we want to earn money. think of what you really want in life. think of a good motivation for you. if you have saved more money then travel. treat your parents and friends to something good. good luck! ^_^

I have found myself in a similar situation to yourself. I'm in a job that I completely hate. I dread going there most days and when I am there I'm wishing I was anywhere else. It is a complete drain on my motivation to do anything else outside of work. Having worked in my dream industry as a volunteer for a few months was undoubtly the best time in my life. It was definetly when I was happiest. If I could I'd be back in that world tomorrow without a blink of the eye but the world isn't quite that simple. I financially support my mother, so I need a steady income to do so. Unemployment really cannot be an option for me.
The middle of last year work became even uglier for me, and I contemplated resigning. Even made an appointment with the manager to do so. I'd resigned on unrealistic dreams and childhood fantasies and decided to do along with something a little more realistic but would probably make me happier than I currently was. Knowing resigning wasn't the wisest thing ever, financially, I was easily swayed by my very convincing manager. Needless to say, I'm making changes, baby step by baby step. Still in my current job, and all going well will be for a while, but with the long time aim of getting out of there. I'll be finding myself back at university Monday week while working at my current job part time.
I know I'm in for a very long, hard road with the decision I've made but I'm figuring short term pain for long term gain. What I ended up doing, was trying to figure out what I'd like to be saying in 20-30 years time.
1. I worked a job, paid the bills and did random shopping in an attempt to make me happy and fill a void that couldn't be filled this way, or;
2. I followed my heart, and lived a life I dreamed. It was a long tough road, but at the end of the day I was happy.
I decided I'd rather be truly happy and wanting to get out of bed in the morning, rather than owning a pile of random things I could live without.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks. :D Money was the only reason I was staying at my current job. I knew I had to work to support my mother so figured that I may as well stay there (it also has the potential to assist me in actually working in what I will be studying in) rather than look for some retail part time job. I definetly believe I'm on the road to a happy more fulfilled life, although I'll probably have a better idea of that in a couple of weeks time after I've started my desired uni course.

I also had the same problem. I'm a Psychology graduate and have worked as a collections coordinator in an multi-national company. Yes, the really pay well. After 6 months, I resigned and now I'm just waiting for the opening of summer classes to obtain professional teaching units. I'm going to pursue a career in education and by August, I will be taking the Licensure Examinations for Teachers. I learned that life is all about choosing what will make you happy. The essence of living is being able to enjoy what you do and making a difference, right? So always consider what will make you happy.

If you find your present job to be truly fulfilling, keep on with it. If you find that you have wasted your years in school if you do not put it to appropriate use, then pursue it. Life is a matter of choice. It will have to be you to decide on it. Fulfillment in a job is to be happy in what you are doing. Feel for yourself. Will you be happy in your present job 5 to 10 years from now? If you have some doubts, give your profession a chance. It may be that, which shall give you a sense of fulfillment. By the way, keep marriage at bay until you have achieved stability. The way it is now, you are still very unstable not even knowing what road to take professionally and career-wise.

Hello.
I just quit a very high-paying job (6 figures if I went full-time) because I hated it. It was quite honestly the easiest job you could ever have.
8 hour days, 2 hour breaks, EASY work, leave work at home, etc.
But I hated it so I picked up the phone one day and just quit. I DO NOT REGRET IT and I still don't know exactly what I'll do yet.
I say forget the money. Life is short. Do what you love.

i really love being a nurse. during college i never got tired having my shifts in the hospital and studying at the same time. i love the people, i love the patients, it's basically my fulfillment i guess. but you know here in the philippines, nurses are paid maybe at the minimum salary rate. and being me, i cant survive not buying anything during pay days. lol. but with you and others here who are advising me to follow what makes me happy... i was doing my resignation later a while ago already. but i still need to weigh things out. shopping or happiness. hahaha.

Well this happens to plenty of people out there. Who found fullfillment in a different course. Pick the work that you think will suit you best. It doesnt mean that you graduate from this degree you gonna end up like that. If you love your job now, stick to it.Weigh things out. Which job open good opportunities for you. Good Luck!

Most people careers are based on fulfillment and not money. being able to help someone or make there life a little easier is what I am to do in my profession. look at teachers who have been in there fields for over 20 years. you have to like what u do because if u don't u wouldn't want to go to work. also speaking from a financial aspect if u have no financial obligiations now why not put some of your earnings into a mutual fund and invest in your future..that way if u are in a low paying postion you will have something to fall back on..just in case.work on your savings now that way you will be prepared regardless of what career u choose...

You are very lucky coz you have a good job, some people are not lucky as you are, some are still looking for a job. If i will on your situation of course i'll stay at my present job as you have said the pay is really good. But if your heart is in your chosen course Nursing, maybe you can look for a job that pay more than what you get on your present job. Try applying for abroad, the pay is much higher.Dont resign if you have no job to work for. One thing i can advice you is while you are earning much please try to save some for your future.

I am in this situation right now. I am working for 3 long years and I must say that I was happy before. When I got promoted last year, things became complicated. It's not that I hate being on a higher position with a bigger load of work but I am not happy anymore. Like others, unemployment is not a factor for me. Here in our country, unemployment is very much big. I am loong for a better job now. I will resign as soon as I got a new one.
All I can say to you Bethel is, just be practical. Choose a job that really suits your lifestyle and the one that will fulfill your dreams but at the same time, making you financially stable. If at the moment you still can't find a better job, stick first with your currect. Look for a job you like while still working in the call center and when you are accepted, then that's the time you resign. Just a piece of advice, some things that we don't love may be the one that we will love the most in the near future. It's just a matter of time. There are things that we love but we have to give up, not because we don't want it anymore but because we realize that it is not for us.
Cheers,
Dhen

hi bethel..i understand that ur confused since you're a licenced nurse and yet your're working as a CSR.i quess this is what you need to do. Ask you're self what kind of job you really want. Are you enjoying your present job? If yes then i quess no reason to resign. But if ur not happy and you're just staying there because they offers u a high salary,,, better find a new job that suits you.Happiness and contentment is more important than any other material things.Yes its true that nurses here recieves low compensation. If i were you i'd rather apply abroad.....
Good luck to you. God bless.

you know what i'm really not happy with what i'm doing right now. everyday i literally drag myself for me to go to work. my supervisor even asked me if i needed the job bec. just last month i didnt go to work for 3 days in a row and i didnt file for any leaves. and i just answered yes, bec. my supervisor is really a nice guy and he's so kind to us. but everyday, there is this hatred in my heart. i dont like this anymore, but my mind says i need my salary, so i'm very very confused... thanks anyway =)

ohhh sad to hear that!if thats the case then better find a new job.Remember you're still too young and there are lots of good opportunities waiting for you...specially that you're a licenced nurse. But this is what i want to advice you.Dont quit your present job if you havent find a new job yet.If you're going to apply just file a leave.Thats actually what im doing.Advantage on me that im working at night so i can apply during day time. But my case is different from your's. Im enjoying and i love my present job.Just that i want to experience working abroad thats why im trying to apply. But i dont make it rush.If given the chance i'll grab it.Well my point is we're still young lets grab every opportunities that comes our way.dont stick for one thing specially if ur not happy with it.Lets give time for ourselves to excel. :)

you get paid well where you are but your heart is not in it. money is important so if i were you i would work where i am just a little longer so i can save some money, because like you say nursing in your country really does't pay much. Then when you would go to nursing your dream job it would not be so bad. Be encouraged you will make the right choice i know it.

You're not alone, Bethel. I also am a licensed teacher but I gave up my teaching career for it was really stressful. Am working in a call center company for almost 6 months now and so far so good. No more sleepless nights for the lesson plans, test questions, evaluation sheets, computation of grades whatsoever. Well yeah, I also wanted to give justice to my profession but I got to study masters and get some other teaching certificates before I'll head my way back to the teaching field. In a way or two, teachers are more likely the nurses when it comes to compensation. So I wanted to go abroad if am gonna be teaching again. And I guess with your qualifications, you can also land a high paying job as a nurse on the other sides of the earth. :)

Well yeah, I love teaching since I was a little kid but sometimes you just have to give up something you love as you go on searching for the "right place" for you. I mean, I am not sure yet if am for teaching coz I admit there were times when I was still teaching that I even wished I was sick so Id have an excuse not to show up in my classroom. Crazy and immature but that was true. Well, we're both still young to figure things out. ;)

why choose just one when you can have both?money at the same time the fulfillment of your dreams...
why not consider going abroad?anyway your single...
well, for me, at this point don't quit with your current job yet so you will have enough money for the processing of the requirements.
explore the world...
anyway, have you taken nclex already?
if you will be hired as a nurse in the states, you can bring your immediate family with you...
think about it girl...

i am a pharmacist and i used to try it out in call centers. but i feel like it's not fulfilling for me. i love working as a pharmacist. sure, the pay is far too low compared to works in call center. but it's my call and being with the patients and customers who need help, advice or assistance for medicines is what my heart wants to do.
as for you, you decide on what you really wanna do. ask yourself on where you will feel fulfilled and happy for the rest of your life. sometimes, money is important but not all the time. you might end up regretting for not practicing your profession. but as i said, the decision is still up to you. good luck.

hi mary ann, you know what, currently half of our class are working in a call center company. =) it's weird bec. we are in demand abroad but we chose to work in a call center first. i also agree with you, ever since college we were molded to serve our patients. but when reality kicked in, money is a very important consideration to make. but i think i must follow my heart. just like what you did. =)

just listen to your heart, if your job as a nurse makes you feel really comfortable and happy, and you don't think money is really important compares to what you'll feel about your work, of course you should take the nurse job.. but you should also consider about your current lifestyle, maybe if you take the nurse job and make less money, you should be more careful in spending your money.

yep. it always pays well if we listen to our hearts. what our hearts dictate us to do usually ends up with our happiness. i am not a nurse but i feel like nurses do a great job in the society. helping people with their needs, aiding doctors. and i salute them even if they don't get paid well here in our country.

Money can be a big factor in choosing occupations. But then, if you don't enjoy what you're doing, then chances are you won't be able to stay long in that job. I have been through the same thing, and believe me, deciding wasn't easy. I stayed around in a job that pays good, but keeps me stressed out most of the time. It made me irritable and I always felt tired. I guess I just didn't like what I was doing then. So I transferred. The job I have now doesn't pay as good as the last one, but I'm definitely happier here. I don't feel stressed and I rarely absent myself. It's really a matter of choice. If you think pay should be prioritized, then stay in your current job. But if you feel that something's missing or lacking, then maybe it's time to start considering a new career. Whatever you decide on, face it and don't think of regrets. It makes us unable to move forward and see the other opportunities in store for us. Whatever you decide on, hope you'll be happy. Good luck.

If you like your job where you are at now then stay but if you don't and you want to fulfill your dreams then you need to go on and do that. If you don't you will always wonder what it would of been like to do it. Money is not always everything. If you think will be happier at nursing then you had better go for it now while you have the chance never know what life will give you later on.

1. I disagree with you,Bethel, when you say that you are single and hence have no financial obligation. You have obligation to your own future and those that are going to depend on you in later life. Take a life insurance policy immediately and ensure that you save at least 10 %of salary through other other financial instruments.
2. You are a graduate nurse. But when you joined for the course was this your true interest?
3.It is more important in life to do a job which suits your temperament and interest. Job satisfaction is much more important than money.Money will automatically follow once you are dedicated to the job.
4. By the way there is a great shortage of nurses in US of A at present.
5. If you get a job in USA and slog for five years you can retire to your country with a nest egg which will last rest of your life!
