I heard all the hype but can anyone tell me what exactly had they improved on?

Security wise Windows Vista has security built in to the very core.
Many security companies have reviewed it's internal architecture and although exploits and holes will still be found it is an order of magnitude more secure than Windows XP.
The drivers for both ATI and NVidia game cards are not yet up to snuff. I'm a gamer and plan on waiting a few months until the new software drivers are patched well enough to play all the major games.
The new user interface is very cool but it needs a very powerful machine with lots of memory to run it.
The newer Intel and AMD chips are 64 bit and have a lot more power than what the old 32 bit Windows XP was capable of tapping.
Soon most new programs will be writen to take advantage of the new Vista features and will probably run poorly if all on XP.
