I would like peoples opinions on the following image.
I made this out of blends of scrap clay. I liked it fine until I reduced it. It reduces horribly. Loses all detail.
So anyway just want to know what you think. All honest opinions are welcome.
Thanks

I don't think it lost all it's detail at all... In fact, I think you are quite talented and should give yourself more credit!!! Seeing that you posted this a month ago, I'm going to bet you've already sold this piece to someone who loves it just as much as everyone on here!

Well this hasn't been sold as it is only the cane. The details get lost when I reduce it small. This is about an inch or so across.
Thanks so much for the compliment.

Thank you very much. The colors I used for the one I posted were very muted so it didn't come out as clear and crisp as the other. Considering I used scrap clay I don't think it came out too bad. I used scrap clay so if it came out horrible I wouldn't waste clay.

Polymer clay is a clay you can bake in a home oven. It is quite durable once baked. It is firm to work with but not hard and this varies by brand.
It is a type of pvc (what they use for water pipes in the states) so it is water resistant.
There is so much you can do with this stuff -its amazing!

Thank you very much. Unfortunately, that is before I reduced it. I made a few things with it and once I have them sanded I'll post pictures.

Yep same basic technique. The petals are shaded differently but otherwise; yep done the same.

I admire any body that can make a cane that looks good, and like the item it is supposed to resemble! I am soooo severly cane challenged it is ridiculous! LOL LUV the colors, love the skinner on the petals, LUV it ALL! But then I didn't see it before it got reduced, so that's just me.
The "Wild Lentils" in my flickr album started out as a safari cane. That ended REAL quick.
You might need to work on the lighting though, looks like your flash went crazy! I am still learning how to use DH's latest Digital - a real SLR and a major pain in the behind! And I know how to work digital cameras...

Thank you so much. Sadly that is not the post reduction picture.
That was made with scrap clay for the skinner. I was trying to get the technique. So I used scrap in case it was horrible.
There is a better picture up on my profile if you didn't see it yet.
Thanks again

Thank you they were accidental colors. I took some scraps in the pink, purple and blue families and mixed them. That gave me the mauve-y color. And I did the same with oranges, yellows and reds to get the salmon color.
Then I did a skinner blend.
Since this was the first time I was trying the shading this way I decided it best to use scrap rather than 'good' clay.

Thank you. I am looking to see if I have a better picture. Believe it or not though the cane itself is kinda 'fuzzy' looking.

I think it's wonderful! It looks almost real, like it is trapped inside of a glass piece. Keep up the amazing work!

Ok, you said honest opinions - it is blurry, not clear like your avatar. I am wondering, the descriptions says "cane" is this the top of the handle on a cane? You make these? If so do you do the whole cane or just the handle or am I totally confused. I love your avatar and although I've never worked with clay myself I've always had an interest in it.

No in this case cane is more like those slice and bake cookies with the picture in the middle. Do you know the ones I mean? The whole thing is clay and can used for many different purposes.
Don't feel bad or anything ... believe it or not the picture is pretty darn clear. The problem is the can itself ... the colors I used just didn't work well. I am looking right at it and the live version looks fuzzy/blurry. NOT my most successful venture trust me!
Thanks for complimenting my avatar. Good choice of colors there!

Thanks again for your comments.

Ok a 'better' picture is on my profile page. There is no glare so it is easier to see. I think you can see though that the colors themselves seem 'fuzzy'.
Let me know what you think of the new image.

It looks beautiful to me! I wish I had the talent and patience to create canes from polymer clay. I love the rose in your avatar, too...it's gorgeous! How long have you been making these? How did you start?

Aww you can learn. Anyone can learn to craft. Just try out different things till you find the thing that makes your skirt fly up!!

I started by making candy cane ornaments over 5 years ago. I would go back and play with the clay once in a while but not loads. This past year I decided to try selling my crafts (all sorts of stuff).
So last spring/summer is when I really started getting into clay. That rose in my avatar I only did this fall. It was the very first rose cane I tried! I was pretty proud of myself. The canes I did prior to that one left a bit to be desired but they weren't the worst things in the world. Honestly the most time consuming part of making that cane was the skinner blend. Not counting the leaves it was only a long snake cut into sections and 'reformed'.
Thanks again for your comment.

Goodness, I didn't know there were so many others interested in pc. If your avatar was your first rose cane my hat is off to you! I have several tutes on canes of various kinds and reducing them...I'm probably just too impatient when I am working! Do you go to Polymerclaycentral.com? Great site! I also used to take the magazine "Polymer Cafe". Great magazine!

One thing to always do it let your cane rest before reducing so that the temp throughout can regulate.
I belong to PCC! Great people!
Yep that is my very first attempt at a Leigh rose cane.

I have trouble reducing my canes. They either become terriby distorted or lose detail. There is a trick to arranging the clay to avoid losing so much detail, but I haven't found it yet! I never have made a good rose cane.
I cna't really see the image that well to evaluate it, but you're right, it doesn't have half the color that your avatar one has.

Your clay can't be too soft or they will distort. Also there is a process to reducing canes. IF I remember in the morning I will find you a link to a good tutorial on doing so.
If you would like to see a better picture go to my profile page.

I think it is very pretty! I bet you are thetype who is hypercritical of your work when it doesn't turn out as you have envisioned.

Thank you. Your right I can be hypercritical of my work. Think it is the Sagitarrius in me!
Anyway I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I didn't really like the blend but then when it was made into a rose it was pretty.
Only problem came when I reduced it to tiny - there wasn't enough contrast in the colors and it just turned into a swirly blob. Oh well I didn't reduce the whole cane so I have more to play with!

Well it looks pretty good to me..lol A darn sight better than anything I could do. Sorry it doesn't reduce well but it looks nice like that if it makes you feel any better. I think you did pretty good for just using scraps.

Thank you. I was surprised with the end result. As I said earlier; I didn't like the original blend but like it as a rose. I just wish I could reduce it small but it just becomes a blob. :(

Thank you. There is a better picture of it on my profile page.
Both are done with the same basic technique; the difference comes in how I arranged the colors.

You squeeze the cane to make it smaller. It reduces the diameter of the cane and it reduces the image within the cane.

I agree with the others! It's very pretty! I can see what you're saying about the detail, and I'm not sure why it would do that, unless you might have been using a softer clay than usual. Canes seem to do better with the firmer clays, but if you only have soft, all is not lost. You can "leech" excess oils out of soft clay by making into a sheet, then putting it between sheets of paper, and pressing it between books or something like that. You might need to change the paper if it still seems soft, but it will definately make it firmer for you. :-) Let us know if still have that problem with other canes.
Still, I don't think it's bad looking at all. It would make lovely slices or jewelry!

Thank you for the compliments. I think it was just that the colors were very soft and muted to begin with so they look soft and muted in the cane. Well lesson learned .... need more contrast!
I know about leaching but this wasn't the issue; the clay wasn't all soft and smooshy.
Thanks again. I can cane since I made the one in my avatar (big difference huh?)
