To all my friends and MyLot members i would like to thank you all for your support with regards to my cat Buttons a persian aged one and a half, over the the past 7 days, upon trying everything possible to treat him for obstuction of kidney stones, known in cats called cystals. Other tests confrimed that kidney failiure had started a total irriversable situation, and putting the cat through anymore days off stress was a definate no no, so therefore we have had to make the dissicion to put him to rest on the rainbow bridge. I feel so dreadful and it's very hard trying to keep a brave face on for my two children aged 4 and 9. I feel like i've lost a baby, my house does not feel the same without him, and his toys and tree house are still here. My Buttons was adopted from our local animal shelter, which does spay all their animals but i am beginning to now wonder because before i had buttons i also had another persian called Charlie (adopted from the same shelter) who only lasted one year and died of the same kidney faliure, my two cats were identical and i am now wondering if they were breeded as kidney failiure is a hereditary illness, my vet seems to think the same, so along with saddness anger is now setting in that if they are breeding these little souls with an imminant death sentence awaiting them, my vet is going to make some inquiries and look into the matter, unfortunately over here in Spain we do not have associations like the RSPCA, there are numerous animal shelters that do a fantastic job in collecting and careing for all the strays left roaming around, and if it was'nt for these people the animals would be round up and taken to a pound in Malaga and gassed. Once again thanks for all your support and help. Tara

I am sorry as well for your Buttons...I'm glad you posted these discussions, though as I am concerned for our Taffy; I'm going to make sure that we purchase food with 3.5 or less ash content as well.
CJ is so attached to the cat right now, if anything happened to it I don't know what we'd do to console him as he wouldn't understand much of what we would say to him.

Oh yes do hun on the internet they recommend to buy the hills diet for all cats, i think this is a point that all us cat lovers should note about the ash factor in the food, until something sad like this happens we are unaware, when i got shopping on monday i am actaully going to take paper and pen and write down all the brands and the amount of ash they contain and post a discussion up here. My kids are besides themself over buttons and it is just so hard to put on a brave face and even harder to tell them we lost them. Thank you for your reply. xx

I am so sorry to hear about your kitty. I love cats more than anything, though I'd hate to see any animal suffer. I know they truly become part of the family.
If it's true people are breeding these cats knowing they have a genetic illness, then I don't know what to say. That is beyond cruel!

Taramoon i`m sorry to hear your loss and i understand fully by what you are saying about it feeling as though you have lost one of your children. We become so attached to our pets that they do become part of the family and are treated accordingly. It`s a shame that you have lost both your animals to the same disease and if thats the case them the place you got him from needs to be investigated or the type of food the animals have to be addressed as this also causes kidney disease in cats.I ish you well and i feel for you and your children at your great loss

Yes definately hope more investigation is going to go into this i've now gone from upset to anger and it just seems very freaky, although the vet does think it is a hereditary illness, aparently kidney failure seen in cats that have a poor diet does not show until they are the ages of 5 - 7 years both my cats were exactly the sne age when i have lost them both young baby's not even a year and a half old. But like the replies to my discussion above we should all look at our cats diet i have just dragged to dried cat biscuits out of my cupboard to see what the ash count is on it...and believe it or not the count it 6.5 which is way to high and i thought i was buying the best food at the supermarket cause it was expensive and i've always thought the more you pay the better the product.... Thank you for you warm wishes xx

Tara ,I'm so sorry for your kitty. You sound like such a good mommy but he will be waiting for you at the Rainbow bridge.I know it it so hard to make that decision as I have been through that before.Even though you know you made the right decision, you still feel bad.You feel like you lost a member of the family and things just aren't the ame.Your pain will ease up with time.I hope that the vet will be able to do something.my thoughts and prayers will be with you and Buttons.

I just wanted to add my condolences with the rest. I am so sorry about Buttons. It's a hard decision we have to make but I'm sure it is especially hard when your little one is so young. My prayers are with you and your family. I know it's hard now but try to remember all the happy times with Buttons. I'm sure he will be waiting for you on that Rainbow Bridge and is just having the time of his life playing there without the pain anymore.
