Do your cats and dogs get along?

We have 2 dogs and 4 cats. Our home was relatively peaceful, without much interaction between the pets, until we adopted a kitten 8 months ago. Wanda is very playful and would torment the older cats by ambushing them and doing other annoying things like trying to sleep on their heads. In November, Skye (our sheltie puppy) entered the picture. Skye and Wanda soon discovered each other and became fast friends and adversaries. They spend their days stealing toys from each other, hogging each-other's blankets and vyeing for human attention. I turned around a moment ago just as Wanda made herself cozy on Skye's blanket. A moment later, Skye discovered the interloper and promptly laid down on top of the cat. Here's a pic--Skye shifted just before I took it--she WAS lying directly on top of Wanda:D

Depends on which cat and which dog. Bubba will barely tolerate any of the dogs, avoids any interaction. Spiffy will play with any of the dogs (my Chihuahua, Jester, used to drag her around the house by her ear ) and loves snuggling with my Aussie, Shiloh...but other times she will beat him up, she won;t play with the puppy, Storm or our old mutt Nicky.. Orion (20 years old) puts all the dogs in their place with a few gentle bops, though the puppy hasn't figured out she really needs to leave Orion alone.

20 years is a really healthy lifespan for a kitty. I'm sure the puppy learned quickly enough.

I agree, that is a cute picture of them. It is so hard to get a good shot of my kritters, they always run off or something the minute I reach for my camera

I have five dogs and many cats and they all get along for the most part. I do have one cat that thinks he is the ruler and another one who hates the other cats. But I have seen my dogs "grooming" the cats. It is funny to watch. Then sometimes the cat will rub up against the dog. Mine also will sometimes share a blanket but not very often. My son's cat will actually knead on the dog. Now that is hysterical to see.

Evil Queen Poochie - Here is Poochie the Queen of the Castle...she is quite a little rascal, always causing trouble.
Well our house is divided by a gate..lol On one side is the kitchen, eating part and cooking, and two bedrooms. On the other side is the living room, bird room and bathroom with the stairs goint to 2 bedrooms. My mom's bedroom is on the kitchen side where she has her dog, Puppy a 1/2 springer and 1/2 cocker spaniel 6 yrs old. She has Blindie a 12 yr old blind cat that you would never know was blind. Then there are Little Girl an Poochie. They are two cats that were found outside and bottle raised when their mother was hit by a car. Poochie is like the Evil Queen always plotting against the rest of the animals. On the other side of the gate is where my computer is in the living room. Also shared by 3 birds, Lucy a 12 yr old Blue & Gold Macaw, Max a white capped pionus and Arthur a cockatiel. Then there is Gizmo my male chihuahua 2 yrs old, Bella my new chihuahua puppy 9 weeks old, and Cocoa my Muchkin Cat that is 5+ years old. Everyone in the house gets along together...with the exception of the Evil Queen Poochie.... She lies in wait hiding around corners just waiting to get a chance at swatting someone. When she comes over the gate...no matter how sneaky she tries to be Gizmo sounds the alert and tries to block her. He won't quit till she leaves the room. Usually she makes her way to the couch and tries to get Cocoa who hides the second Gizmo alerts to her presence. Even Bella who's only been here 6 days knows the alert and takes cover under my desk...lol She is just terrible, she even sneaks up on Blindie when he's sleeping just to swat him and take his warm spot. She's quite a terror but mothers little favorite. Her sister Little Girl is just the opposite, she comes in and visits with the dogs and cats..although she would love to eat the birds but knows that Lucy will give her a run for her money so she doesn't bother her..Lucy is bigger..lol

We have 2 cats and a dog (a miniature schanuzer) and they all get along pretty well. Our yougest cat (Princess, a very apt name for her) rules the roost and the other 2 have very quickly realized this and just stay out of her way even to the point of giving up their resting spot if she wants it.

LOL That is such a cute story. We have 2 cats, one of which is a simease. Her name is Cleopatra. As you may know, they are jellous of their owners. They are one owner cats. I am the owner. She follows me around and talks to me. She sleeps on my pillow and makes me move. lOL. Well I got a Eskimo Spitz puppynamed Wiley. They are the dog version, as personality goes, to the simease cat. When we brought Wiley home. Cleopatra looked at him and walked off but when Wiley jumped on my lap, Cleopatra had enough. She came and put him off. Now they get along good until one of them gets close to me. LOL the other one will try to show that they are the boss and they own me. LOL it is so funny

That sounds like something that our Sheltie (Sweetheart) would do to our cat (Gina). They love to play together and also sleep together. I even have a picture of the two of them laying in Sweethearts Kennel!

I've had cats that like dogs and cats that merely tolerate them.

Yes they do, they have their little Squabbles but they get on great. The Cats have been with us from Kittens so they grew up with the Dog and they are ok with new Dosgs coming in to once they have sussed them out.

With out 5 cats and 3 dogs we have a fairly peaceful coexistance. I have a rule and most of the time it is followed. No fighting in the house. I want them all to get along but they do squabble. The dogs wouldl like to rough up thd kitties however they say no way. So we have the two camps. Not bad for all guys!!!

That's certainly a houseful .. I bet you are never without one of other of the pets wanting a nice cuddle .. or feeding or letting out .. I miss doing all those things for my 'twins' (just two kitties in the litter).

Oh they are so cute! We have one dog and two cats. The one cats is always rubbing up against the dog and laying beside him. She touches noses with him all the time. The other cat, dislikes the dog so much. She lays just out of reach of him, flexing her claws and just stares him down. The big old lab actually gets up and moves across the living room when she does that...lol Who can blame him, she has scratched his nose more times than I can count. He is always trying to sniff the cat and it drives her nuts!

I think the photo of Skye, and Wanda is lovely! I don't have dogs, but I do have 5 cats, and they al get along pretty well, providing they all remember that Sasha the eldest cat (the one in my avatar), s "King", and they all do what he tells them!!! LOL! My kitten Lily sounds a lot like your Wanda - she is just 7 months now, and has a great time annoying her big brothers! Here are some of my cat family enjoying a lazy afternoon!

I have never had cats and dogs in the same house at the same time .. but I have had cats and dogs iyswim .. I've never had a single pet so my pets always had a 'partner in crime' to play with .. cats and dogs are definitely 'worse' than children to look after hehehe !! Cheeky and smart at the same time ... and thankfully my various pets have all got on together .. which is more than can be said for my children .. !

I have two cats and two dogs and they get along very well together. When we got bailey, the last addition to the family, things got shaken a bit, and still today he gets things stirred up more than any of the other pets- but he's also the youngest and I think that has a lot to do with it. Tazz, our black lab, adopted bailey from the beginning. They sleep together and play together all the time even thought tazz is several times bigger than bailey :)

well i didnt got cats and dogs togather as i always have them seperatly,,,,,,,,,but yes my dogs of different age and breed always went along pretty well and younger ones always respected older ones no matter its about even sharing food,so i get knw another fact of life that animals do have realtionships and respect for eachother.

Well i didnot have both cats and dogs as pets at once. But i have known people having them.My neighbor used to have them and both the cat and dog used to get along well. The surprising thing is that the dog used to shout at other cats but not at his co-pet.The key lies in the fact that they stay together from their childhood.
