Yep, I agree with yndesai, open Suse and ubuntu are great for a desktop, there are plenty of other linux flavours too. My choice would be suse.

if you're after a pure open source, community developed and maintained distro, with very little likelihood of forking the way fedora & RHEL did, or of the distro company getting bought or restructured like mandriva and corel, go for debian. push the envelope further and go for the real debian and not ubuntu and knoppix, which are simplified derivatives...

Mepis and PcLinuxOS is one of the best I've ever tried.
With there plug 'n play ability, it is not that hard for a noob like me to shift immediately to Linux.
In fact, you can customize your Linux to anyway you want, that's the beauty of Linux, you can have all what you are needed and trash all the unnecessary softs which you think it is just a junk.
