NO Smoking! Right or Wrong?

No Smoking Allowed - No Smoking sign, smoking is hazardous to the health of the smoker and second hand smoke is hazardous to the health of people around smokers.

I just read an article on Associated Press, Hawaii is one of 16 states in the US that has banned smoking in ALL public areas, including bars. It seems many bar owners are upset about this and are staging smoke-ins - breaking the local laws and allowing smoking. Fines for doing this will range from $100 to $500 and could mean the owners lossing their licenses and customers can be fined $50 each. Is this right or wrong? Should smoking be banned from businesses even if the owners say it's ok? Would you stop going to a business because smoking is or isn't allowed? Should the government be allowed to decide whether we distroy our health or not?

Yes its wrong its breaking the law. Maybe they believe that they should be allowed to smoke, but obviously the majority believe that they shouldn't or the law would never have passed. Although for instance in my state, Arkansas, bars are allowed smoking if they make the bar 21 years or older. I think that makes sense and if you don't want to go to a place that has smoke, you can just go to another bar. I would stop going to a business if smoking was allowed actually. I am firmly against smoking and I will not go to places that I think will have a lot of smoking because it will make me sick. I do understand that it is a violation of rights by the government. But they have to take control and go with the majority. Apparently the majority doesn't want smoking to be in public venues and thus there won't be smoking in public venues. It isn't the government deciding it is the majority of the state/country.

That was the first thing I thought when I read the article, how did the law get passed unless the majority wanted the law.

The only reason that non-smokers are getting more breaks and benefits is because there are more people who don't want to have to deal with second hand smoke.

I smoked for quite a while and even then I never smoked inside. I would always go outside to have a smoke. I think that no smoking laws just respects those people who do not smoke. They shouldn't have to smoke second hand, when we can just walk outside and smoke. It never stopped me from going anywhere that did not allow smoking.

I used to have a brother-in-law and his wife who were both smokers and they didn't allow smoking in their house, they would go out on their back porch. Smoking inside makes everything smell horrid and stains everything from furniture to walls.

Personally I could care less if people smoke or don't smoke. That is their choice to do. No I don't buy into all the second hand smoke statistics that are passed around. Statistics aren't proof of anything. I can show you statistics that make it look like eating ice cream causes drownings. Doesn't make it true but I can make it look like it is. If people want to show something they know what to ask, how to ask and more importantly what not to ask. On that note I think the businesses should have the right to decide whether or not they want to have smoking there. I don't think the government should be deciding for them. The owners know more then anyone which customers they want to cater to and which are more likely to be at their place. I know many do not like smoke and/or smokers. That's their choice of course. However if we start banning things just because some think it's unhealthy or problmatic (and I say think because I've seen so many contridictory studies and statistics it can make anyone's head spin. Nothing on smoking is a 100 % proven) then soon other things will be banned as well. Once we start with one item it's very easy for people and thus the government to move on to others. You ban smoking today, tomorrow it's anything fried, and then what next? I'd like the government to back up a bit and let the people decide for themselves what they want to do with their bodies and let businesses decide what they want to have in their places.

I personally don't think the government should be able to dictate anything like that...I mean, think back to when you first saw people smoke. Before color television, every show had someone smoking...lol I hate to say it, but I myself am a smoker and I really want to be able to quit. I'm not perfect. I am a born again Christian and I know it's wrong but I'm still a sinner, saved by grace... Only He can help me to quit...I'd rather go to an establishment where I can smoke after I've eaten something than one that doesn't allow it. Keep me in your prayers that I may be able to quit.

LOL - we truely must be sisters! I too have the horrid habit of smoking allow I have managed to cut way back from what I used to I do still sin - I am harming my body. I too have also prayed for God to help me quit and I've decided it's like asking God for patience - He's going to make us wait longer. Honestly I believe this is one of those things that He wants us to be strong and do it on our own. By doing this we will be preparing ourselves for even greater battles ahead.

Thats good that it helps you to cut down. I've heard people say that being denied makes them just want to smoke more.

Smoking is highly injurious to health and it should be banned in all places. If someone really must smoke i think he/she can smoke in their own homes if at all. Smoking is considered harmful to the environment and it actually is but most smokers barely care about themselves muchless care about somebody else or their surroundings. If smoking wasnt bad enough its even worse for non smokers and those who tag along with their smoking friends.

I am firmly against smoking. If I had the authority, I would drive all the cigerette-making companies out of business and make cigerette-making illegal.

First off, i am totally against the goverment running our lives. However, i think this smoking ban is compltely valid and good. The thing is, smokers aren't just destroying their own health, they are destroying other people's health, too. What about people who already have lung problems? We shouldn't have to struggle for every breath so a smoker can light up. It is not a smoker's right to ruin our lives as well as their own.

ofcourse yes smoking should be banned in public places..it not only is harmful for the people who smoke but also for other people who inhale the smoke bcoz a person smokes....so there has to be a line drawn somewhere so that people follow the rules..i think the decision on ban of smoking in public places is very good one and govt should continue it..

I think it's right to ban smoking in the public areas.Because smoking doesn't only hurt the smoker's health, but also the other peoplo around them.If some one want to smoke when he or she is bars or some other places,he could go outside or some palces allow them to smoke.

well as we all know that smoking damage us, but i think it should not banned in publich areas, but it would be better to do creative work for letting ppl know that smoking is harmful.... i think alchol should also be banned then, coz it also damage use, either less then smoking but at least it do at some extend.

ya its right that we should not smoke, as it is injurious to our health. aslo it may lead to lung CANCER.i have even heard that smoking in public areas where many people r there, may indirectly affect the health of the individuals there, because there are many carcinogens in the smoke

I feel it is okay to ban smoking in public places because it is a public place and not all are smokers, we should give consideration to those who are not smokers and who will get second hand smoke in that place. Smoking in the privacy of your home is your perogative and you can exercise that freedom.

yep. it's all about self control. atleast control the need for it when in public place. it will also show how much a smoker do know how to respect non smokers as well. but this does not mean that smokers are totally banned from their freedom to smoke. atleast smoke with responsibility.

I believe that banning smoking is wrong, ecspecially in bars. I mean for crying out loud, I think people in a BAR are not there for their health right? Now if you want to tell me that I cant smoke in a gym, yeah, I understand that, or in a health food store, pharmacy or child care center. I being a smoker understand certain places, but a bar is outrageous. Smoking and drinking go hand and hand. Thats like telling people at the gym they cant drink water. It makes no sense.

You make a very good point, now I wonder why it is that smoking and drinking seem to go hand in hand as you put it. I have known a lot of people who will go weeks without either but when they go to a bar they will smoke also.

Howdy ByFaithOnly! Great discussion topic, so I'll chime in from Southern Oregon. When you think about it, the sole purpose of government really is to protect the general public from all enemies foreign and domestic...so yes, there should be a higher power (all lowercase) that should oversee good health standards. Also, I believe that the fine-structure severities are inverse, as customers should be held more accountable for not lighting up than the owners having to be on the ball to blow out their clients' lit matches. Bottom line: Personal responsibility to do the right thing always has its reward, even if that reward is an absence of punishment. Yours in Wellness, Kevin Goodrich Medford, Oregon

thank you, you make a very good point - each individual should be responsible for their actions rather than business owners having to be "police". Similiar to seat-belt laws - I don't know what other state have these or maybe their nationwide but in Michigan seatbelts are required by law, if an adult passanger in a car is not wearing one they are fined, not the driver of the car. If a minor is beltless then the driver is fined.
