Why does television and computer take up so much of our young children's time?

Why do parents allow their kids spend so much time infront of the television or the computer? Kids no longer play the games we used to play when we were kids. A close relatives 8 year old son started getting severe seizures on a daily basis and was told by the specialists that it was coursed by watching too much television. Apparently it was sparked by a child holding a flash light in his face. I think we must spend more time with our children and enjoy a picnic or a drive out or just doing things together than getting the kids a dvd to keep them occupied. How many of you guys out there allow your kids to watch television and how often?

Nowadays kids are getting very much exposed to other kids. That is the primary reason for the kids to turn to television. Also television shows them so many new things that it keeps them engrossed. Children nowadays are exposed less and less to the sunlight. I have planned to spend more time with my children outdoors so that they can be exposed to the nature and all the goodness of open space.

that is great!!! My daugther is 8 years old and since she was a baby I used to ensure that work gets done during the week and weekends we are on the road (I call it roadworthy). So enjoy the outdoors with your kids. When my neighbours 2 kids sit infront of the television you are not even allowed to walk past them.

I don't have children myself, but I find myself at the computer more than ever these days... It's not something I'm proud of, but the Internet is so addictive that this is where I turn to whenever I am bored or fancy a bit of entertainment. The media and I think general public opinion seems to be that we lead very busy lifestyles these days, and taking a short journey to the computer for your entertainment is, I guess, a lazy way of defeating boredom.
Picnics and board games sound lovely though, and I'd love to take part in these kind of things more. I just think that, not that they've become outdated, but that these things aren't done any more due to laziness.

I was talking about this the other day, with television, computers, school and homework kids don't actually play anymore, they don't get a chance to use their imagination, its so sad when i think of all the things I used to do when I was a kid, you just don't see it anymore...
