What do you think about Beauty Pageants?

Beauty Pageants have been around for as long as I can remember. Miss American, Miss Universe etc...not to mention all the smaller scale competitions. To me, I feel like beauty pageants are (to an extent) keeping women opressed in a sense that it reinforces that physical appearance is highly valued and more important that what we learn or accomplish in our lives. They claim "Miss America contestants are some of the smartest women in the country!". Well, I'd like to know what parading around in a swimsuit or evening gown has to do with intellect. What do you think about beauty pageants? Are they sending the wrong message to a generation full of people who are demanding gender equality?

I think you will find that the reason it is intelligent women who take part is because they know that if they win they will get lots of money out of it and they think this is a smart thing to do. I think you are right that it does make people put value on beauty rather than more important qualities but I don't think it keeps women oppressed as men have similar competitions and they do it wilingly and are not forced to.
