So many countries have spent billions of dollars in exploration of the planets to find out what they contain and about their environment. Are we to gain anything practical even if we find that jupiter is made up of hot gases, etc. So should we spend so much on space exploration, except for the satellites

It is very important to explore space. May be one day will start living on mars. find new elements and do new things in space which we never dreamt of.

I can't say if we would find anything, but just as any exploration you won't know if you don't look. I have read science fiction books since I was a child, and that is a long time, and things that I read about as a kid have come to pass. Shuttle crafts, moon expeditions, mars exploration. These were all figments of someone's imagination in the 50's and 60's now it is reality. There could possibly be minerals, ores and who knows what else that the planet earth may one day need to survive. Thank goodness early explorers like Christopher Columbus, Lewis and Clark and Admiral Peary didn't think that they would have nothing to gain by looking.
