I just saw a portion of a Discovery channel show. It was talking about a tiny box jelly fish the size of your fingernail. The Irukandji jellyfish is very venomous, there is no antidote, difficult to see in the water and sounds scary! They check the waters and if they see any, they close down entire beaches! These 2 scientists were trolling for them. They were in full wet suits, but part of their faces were exposed. The man felt a jelly fish touch him across his lip. They immediately got out of the water to go to the hospital. His associate, a woman, pulled off her glove, and a tenticle touched her also. It takes 20 minutes for the poison to hit your system and all they can do for you is monitor you and give you pain medication. Apparently the poison turns on all of your bodies' pain receptors and you hurt everywhere and have nausea also. He suffered for 2 days, and she suffered for 2 weeks! They gave her the highest dosage of morphine allowed by law, and it barely took the edge off the pain! These are scary little guys! Have you ever seen or heard of them?

Now I started a discussion that said I hated beaches and no one was with me on that. This is another reason I don't like them! In Australia our beaches usually have bottles of vinegar situated up and down them to pour on jelly fish stings. They are a nasty little thing and the problem is that they are so hard to see you are stung and don't know what hit you....

I just assumed beaches would be safe! Naive, I guess. My dislike of beaches, is you have to wear bathing suits! LOL! I am not a bathing suit person! LOL!

I have never seen or heard of them and they sound very dangerous. Thanks for the information as I am always interested in learning new things. I have seen the ocean full of your regular jelly fish in Puerto Rico, so thick that row boats have a difficult time penetrating them. It is a scary sight to see.

Have not heard of this, however, have experienced a beach being closed due to jelly fish washing ashore. Absolutely no fun yet so necessary so as not to suffer or die. Not sure what purpose these creatures do, however, I am sure that they must do something. Glad I don't live near the ocean in this case. Too bad the ocean is such an awesome place!!

They sound really awful .. and it's so small .. even small enough you might actually get one inside your mouth with a little splash of water .. I dread to think what it would do if you actually swallowed one ..
I've had really terrible pain in my life .. the kind of pain where you scream and don't even realise you are screaming .. so I can 'kind of' imagine what it might be like .. absolute torture .. and if morphhine doesn't stop it ..... streuth !!
It may be a very tiny jellyfish but in wikipedia it says the tentacles 'can' grow to 1 metre .. and trail along behind the actual body of the jellyfish ... !!
I know this is pretty uncharitable .. but I am glad they are all the way over in Australia .. so can you keep them please .. !
