i know there are many detective series out there, but who is the best serial detective(s) for you? mine will always be Sherlock Holmes. this iconic figure may be a bit cold and imperious by modern standards, but i'd rather have him on my side when the going gets tough :)

My favorite detective is probably Peter Decker from the series by Faye Kellerman. I own most of the series and have read and reread the books. The characters are so well written.. very real people. You get to start with a Case where Peter, a big irish cop, meets Rina Lazarus, a widowed, orthodox jew. Through out the series you're with them as they fall in love, gett married, have a child. If you haven't read any of them, you really should.

Ah yes, Peter and Rina, a lovely couple. I've read some of the books in that series, but I've read all of the Dr. Alex Delaware series written by Faye's husband, Jonathan Kellerman. Dr. Delaware and Milo Sturgis make for quite a crime-fighting-murder-mystery-solving duo. There have been a book or two of J.K.'s that have been a bit on the graphic side, but definitely worth a read.

For the classics I have to agree Sherlock Holmes is one of the best. He set the begining standards for the detectives.
For modern characters I like Alex Cross, from the James Patterson novels. he's intelligent and knows how to look for the non-obvious information. He can piece it all together with style. He's also still very passionate and feeling so he's not just a robotic type image. I find him personable. He makes the stories more interesting to read.

Oh I'm going to have to check out that Murder Club Series. That sounds good. Have you read any V.I. Warshoski books? I might have the spelling off but that is the name of the detective in the stories. They are very good. They did make one movie off her, I enjoyed it but it had a lot of comedy in it.

yes! SH has this distinctive profile (with his hat, pipe and coat) that makes him stand out in this field.
i've always wanted to check out alex cross, because i've been hearing great things about him. maybe one of these days, i'll get one of JP's books. thanks for the tip

I agree. I've always enjoyed Sherlock Holmes, ever since I was a kid. I have read James Patterson's novels as well and I do enjoy Alex Cross. I also liked his Murder Club series too. They're about a group of women that work in the criminal justice system from a detective to a foresnic specialist that join together to solve crimes. The first book in that series was titled "First to Die". The chapters were annoyingly short, but it was well-paced and kept me reading.

I have two favorites. One is the Sue Grafton Alphabet Mysteries. I love the main character Kinsey Millhone. She is so smart and crafty. She has enough attitude that you like her, but not so much that she comes across an bossy. She is also vulnerable and I really like that because it makes her human.
My second favorite is the Joe Gunther Mysteries by Archer Mayor. Again I really like the main character. He is a small town cop in a small town in Vermont and I love the crazy mysteries that pop up. He is a down to earth, blue collar man, a little gruff but that is part of his charm. the series is wonderful and you get to see him grow and move up in law enforcement. Archer Mayor is great at description and after reading the books you feel like you have visited Brattleboro, Vermont.

i'm not quite familiar with these 2 characters but they sound interesting, because of the way you described them -- as in you really know them so well. thanks for your comment

Some point in my life I have dreamt of becoming one, hehe. I've always liked the couple tandem of Remington Steele and Bruce & Cybill (not sure if I spelled her name right) of Moonlighting. Do they count as detective series?

i like a lot of detective figures who came out in print during 1920s-1950s. i also happen to like perry mason although technically he's not a detective (that role belongs to paul drake in that series)

If they can detect and not be actual private investigators I have three I love to read about-Merrily Watkions from the Phil rickman books. She's a natural medium , and a devout episcopalian minister in a naturally conservative parish, a widow and the mother of a very interesting daughter. She tries to keep all these balls in the air and is often called upon to use her special gift to defuse an emotionally charged if not life threatening situation. I also love Stephanie Plum, with her two exciting loves-Morelli and Ranger, cop and bounty hunter respectively. Sexy and yet- funny. Love that New Jersey lady. anything by either of the Kellermans and Patricia Cornwall's kay Scarpetta, who is probably my most favorite of all.

Mine is also Sherlock holmes. He was able to read situations from obvious things. It was a whole new style.
The murderer wasn't always obvious. Most importantly the way he solved his cases is impressive.

I really think you can't beat the Agatha Christie sleuths, Marple and Poirot. Having said that, all the others mentioned so far on this discussion are good reads. I even enjoy the old Charlie Chan series. Has anyone read the series about Cadfael? I find them a little heavy going, but the stories are good. By the way, could anyone recognize a character or the writer of stories about a man who may be a detective and always has a big dog with him? I read one book and some time later wanted to read more about him. By that time, I had forgotten who wrote it. Sure would appreciate any help here.

I loved Nancy Drew when I was growing up.
I like the Sue Grafton - Kinsey Milhone stories. I also like the Lilian Jackson Braun "Cat Who" mysteries. My favorite is probably Dr. K. Scarpetta in the books by Patricia Cornwell.

My favorite is M C Beaton's Agatha Raison. She's a vain, self involved, middle aged smartie pants and I love her. she's one of the funniest characters in modern literature and I'd love to see a TV series based on her adventures. Preferably a BBC series.

Monk and Jessica Fletcher of Murder, She Wrote! Truly, the best. I would love to play Jessica Fletcher on film. I don't look anything like her but I could pull it off. Since I have OCD, I could put up with Monk...I think.
