if so, are you hypertensive? you might be having the disease too. since DM is a heredofamilial disease, every family member should be aware that they might be getting it too. in my family, yes there is, so my brother keeps on checking his sugar level and BP all the time.

yes my grandfather on my mothers side had diabetes and my cusion has it bad. she has never takin care of it like she should so at 30 they told her she had about 5 yrs left and she still don't take care of it right. she takes the shot faithfully but eats whatever she wants for the most part. it scares us with hers being so bad she has gone into suger shock many times. doctors can't believe she has not lost a foot or some thing yet. its can be very bad if you don't take care of it.

My mom is like your cousin, she has turned her blood sugar machine off, her level's were so high. She is also on dialysis as a result of her diabete's. Now she is suffering, and she still does not take care of herself.

My dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a couple of years ago, this was mainly due to his poor diet and him being overweight. He was on medication for a while but after getting his diet on track and losing some weight he has got his diabetes under control. I think now all he does is the occasional blood sugar check. I'm not sure if this type of diabetes is hereditary or not but it's something I will keep a check on in the future.

Unfortunately we do, my father in law in struggling with his diabetes, he cant keep his sugar levels under control and we just found out the other night that he got frustrated with struggling with his levels that he stopped checking it all together. We live out of town from them but I think we need to take the kids home for a visit and talk with him.

Diabetes run high in my family, my paternal grandfather has it, my dad got it as a teenager, my maternal grandmother has it! My dad barely started taking care of it when he got a scare and became hospitalized. my grandfather is very healthy he keeps his sugar levels in check. My grandmother just suffered a stroke because she ate too much discounted valentines candy! i do get checked regularly, so far i don't have it!

There is no one in my genetic line of family with diabetes that I know of. However my sister-in-law has diabetes. She has learnt to manage it very well. She began a strict diet, which I believe is mainly low GI food. She is resricted to 2 pieces of fruit each day, and of course, no sugary food. She came up with some wonderful diabetic recipes. In addition to diet, my sister-in-law started walking, mainly along the beach, every day. She lost a lot of weight and her diabetes is well under control.

My mom is diabetic, she also has high blood pressure. I am aware that it is hereditary. This is a good post to let others know that they can be at risk too. My mom has been lucky she doesn't have to be on insulin. She controls her diabetes with diet and meds.

Yes, a few. Grandmother, aunt's, mom, brother, uncle's, at some point I think I will be too but as of right now, I have changed the way I eat and started going to the gym and hopefully, I could prevent it.

I am not hypertensive and I don't have diabetes. I have an aunt who has it but as I have other health problems I have regular blood counts done and they have all been clear. I do suffer from hypertension but I am taking medication to keep this under control and it closely monitored by mt GP.
