So what is this BIG secret that is being billed as "the Secret to everything - the secret to life filled with joy, good health, financial freedom, loving relationships abundant energy youth: everything you ever wanted."
Huh?!
If you want it in a nutshell, free, without spending a ton of cash it appears to be this: Be a good person, and think positively, by doing so you will attract other good people, and positive things will happen to you.
Common sense for the most part isn't it?
You have to wonder how many millions of dollars these "Secret" gurus will make, from sales of books, DVD, CD's, seminars, speaking engagements. All based around a very simple message.
Some "secret" .... isn't this something that most of our parents have already taught us, that those with spiritual and religious beliefs, philosophies, and values already knew????
Maintaining a positive outlook in today's world can be extremely difficult for some, so is doing the right thing and being a good person. Can a film, tape, or book really make it any easier? I can't answer that, but I can wonder this, will making a bunch of rich folks more richer by buying into these items really bring us true enlightenment and greatly enrich our lives as promised?
What are your thoughts on "The Secret?" Am I off-base with this?
BTW while checking out other websites on "The Secret" I came across more than one self-help guru claiming how wonderful "The Secret" is, BUT they were preaching it first so therefore buy their books too .... As my Mama would say .... "Oy Vey!"

My opinion on the "secret" is that it really isn't a secret. But, that's the only way that some people will listen. If anyone out there sees potential for making a couple more bucks they're going to hop on the train and go for the ride until it stops. People will pay for just about anything these days, sure wish they'd come my way, lol. But the one thing that I do believe is good about the secret is that it's being told. People are being reminded that good things do happen to good people and the rewards for being a good person are great and many, and they aren't only monetary. With the way the world is, we need to be reminded every so often about the goodness of being a moral and just humanity. Just my opinion.

I see. Have you ever read Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich"? In the book he relates basically how if you believe it hard enough, it will happen. It sounds like this is a spin off and some snazzy marketer has found yet another way to make some money off of it. I have the eBook version of Think and Grow Rich. How about I just give it away and then nobody has to spend a dime making the rich richer?

hi sue. some secret, maybe we should all write a book of positive things and read it to ourselves every day.
My "secret" is be young inside, be happy, fine vent the moans at least then they are not trapped in our body and mind. Eat food that makes you feel good. Do things that make you feel good - if you feel guilty of bad about something don't do it. Help someone else but don't spend time worrying about them.
Expect that it'll be ok in the end after all 80% of the things we worry about never happen.
what was that song old song - oohlala life goes on, tralala how life goes on?

Oy Vey indeed! I guess it just goes to show that if you market it properly, people will buy anything. In the end though, there's only one thing that I've ever found to help me remain optimistic in the face of all this world has to offer and that's God. No credit card necessary!

The secret is about the laws of attraction. Most poeple on here are complaining about the cost. You missed the point of those shows. I wonder how many people on here are living the lives they really want to or would like to? Or if they even belive they can. This had little to do with religion and there is much more to it than positive thinking.
Do any of you believe that the world is unlimited? Do you wonder why so many are always complaining about being poor? How do you feel about the rich? Do you dislike them? Your definition is sadly lacking. Do you think they are millions of people searching for something missing in their lives?
You say that maintaining a positive outlook in today's world isn't easy for some. I wonder why that is? If your life is everthing you want it to be, I am happy for you. If you experience true happiness and prosperity, that is great. The teachings of the secret have been around for thousands of years. Still the majority of people on this planet do not live by those teachings.

Then why is it such a secret, why not give it to the world freely and share with your fellow man or if it has been around for 1000s of years just pointpeople in the right direction? By you I of course do not mean you personally sigma77, but those who are charging money for this supposedly "secret" knowledge. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this, and adding to the discussion.

I saw The Secret and I didn't pay for it. I agree that it's really no secret. I've known about the law of attraction for years. The Secret just gives you more details on how to apply it to your life. If anyone wants to watch it for free...

There is a woman in Cannada that works by the principles of The Secret long before it was known and published. She is a millionaire now. I am not so far behind her, and the reason I am behind her is that I only started last year...
The movie doesn't show anything that is new. On the contrary - in the movie they say what I already know : The Secret is a an ancient law, as ancient as the universe itself.
It is not the money these people want from you. It is to share their way of success. Listening to your mother is great - she has a lot of experience and wants only your well being, but... Your mother wants for you the best she knows - does your mother know how to be a millionaire? Does she know how to treat people? Does she know everything that exists in this world?
My parents believe in a steady and safe life - finish school, go to the university, be a doctor, get a job and live your life quietly. That is all they know - noone taught them anything else. It is not that my parents or your parents are poor or in anyway not intelligent - it is only that they gave us what tools they had for themselves, and with these tools came opinions and paradigms...
Can you break free of paradigms givven to you by the people around you and experience something different?
I did, and tried, and succeeded. I also share those principles with others, not as a guru (dear god - me? a guru? LOL) but as a partner to the experience. I have my way of viewing the world. You can choose some other way - it is your right. I know The Secret works for I have proofs.
And to add more for it - I spent not a penny on The Secret. I watched it with a partner of mine, who got the DVD as a gift. You can watch it free on the WWW as well. I know some of the Gurus - especialy Bob Proctor. Bob is one of the most wanted coach in the world. I think it is better to follow the lead of people that have something you want than follow the lead of people who have something you can achieve easily.
Aim for the stars...

The Secret is just a hyped up version of ideas that always been around. The concepts are worth studying if you are interested in success and accomplishment.
If you want to read one of the books (The BEST one IMHO) that inspired the ideas in The Secret, you can do it for FREE.
I have a link to the book on my blog. Look for the post titled "Kevin Hogan and The Secret". the link to the book is at the bottom of that post.
My blog link is in my profile.

i agree with you, secrets are no secrets, they are all popular glaring facts, words of wisdom passed on from generation to generation of unheeding, hard-headed people, lol! we just tend to ignore or overlook them or sometimes our attention is taken away by other trivial things or run down by negativity. we don't even have to buy books or tapes or cds to know the answers. we just don't believe those caring people who tell us about them. maybe because they don't charge? hehe. talk to parents and elders, they got lots of wisdom to share, ever-ready and free, even first-hand, and so true :)

I can't stand Oprah, but I came home from school one day and my mom had just started watching "The Secret" I was like ok then....but then I started to pay attention and was like wow, it makes sense. I knew most of the stuff they were telling, but I never really did anything to act upon it. I've been trying now (when I remember) to strive for what I want and to be positive so in the end I can be making the amount of money I want and own my dream home and car....and be happy of course lol.

The Law of Attraction, and the whole idea that "like attracts like" is way older than the current New Age "wrapping" they are offering.
As I have learned it, the "real" key is that you get exactly what you focus on. Yes, we have been taught this (most of us, anyway) in various ways... the only thing (it seems) people forget is the importance of "positive framing." As in, if you want to meet a nice person who isn't crazy, do NOT ask for "no more nutballs," ask for "a sane person." Most people-- however "positive thinking" they may be-- are very accustomed to making lists and statements about everything they do NOT want.
I don't know that films and books make it all any "easier," although it's my observation that most people seem to respond better to some kind of "system" than to just following their own minds. But you're quite right, "enlightenment" isn't something you can buy in book or DVD format-- it comes from within.

Oprah and Dr Phil just speak common sense using "self awareness" which is one of the base elements of the Hierarchy of Needs pyramid.

IT'S ALL IN THE MIND and most of the people need someone to meddle with our minds to get the secrets out and some people, like me (grin!!) don't sell secrets!!

Oprah's show has definitely brought 'The Secret' to a large audience. I completely agree it is commonsense however there is nothing common about commonsense. Your parents may have taught you this however when you look around it seems apparent that not everyone was given this basic knowledge.
The gurus will make money regardless. Our culture is full of self-improvement junkies who will spend dollar after dollar to find that fulfillment.
Yes a film, tape, or book can make it easier. I watch the movie regularly. I find it motivates me to keep positive. If you have difficulty with negativity you need to be reminded to stay positive and each of us learns in such different ways that different formats prove beneficial to different people.
The Secret video was originally created to air on television for free. I actually received a copy for free while it was available on the internet. When it was changed to be something that would be charged for one of the original speakers asked that her section be removed and in subsequent releases it has been.
My personal perspective is to share this with anyone interested while I pursue my own daily 'Attitude of Gratitude' and enjoy my journey to a more joyful life.

It is hard sometimes to maintain a positve outlook on things so maybe this "secret" tell sus how and recommends ways for us to be positve. Maybe they use subbliminal messageing? It's worked for many years so you never know..And some parents don't teach their kids anything. And as we have found out by now nothing is free in this world it is always gonna cost you money or something else.

I watched both her shows that covered this and I came away feeling confused. I was so anxious to hear what this secret was but when I did I thought that is just too basic a theory. Now my friend was dying to hear all about it. She ordered the DVD's and watched it. She said she would have to watch it many times to get it drilled into their heads. When you hear of these people on her show that have had their lives turned around, I don't know can it really be true. You make some very valid points Sue.

I think most "secrets" are like this. No one has a "secret" to life that everyone on the planet doesn't already know. The secret to life is what everyone has been told all their life. Be true to yourself, work hard, follow your passions, give of yourself... you know the drill.
