Our children sometimes receives money from their aunties as gifts and we open a separate account for them. I heard some parents do not do that. They use it for household expenses. How about you?

My son also receives money from relatives. I think that my son's money should be considered his. There are times that I've "borrowed" his money when money is tight, but I make sure to replace the money as soon as I have some.

I'll just add that my son is only 17 months old and doesn't use money yet. LOL. I'm planning to put his money in some investment vehicle rather than into a savings account. It will be uite a while before he asks to use his money anyway.

Nope, I don't spend my daughter's money. there are times taht I borrow it, but I always pay her back and I ask her before borrowing it. We haven't gotten her a bank account yet, as she prefers to save it in her purse. She is good at saving for something that she wants. She makes plans and then saves up for the plan. I don't mind that she uses it. For her future we have an IRA and I buy stocks monthly at Sharebuilder for her. these are things that I cannot touch so there is no need to worry about using the money. I don't want to use it, because I really want her to have a secure financial future.

We haven't really received money for our sons yet, they always receive gifts, but they are 2 1/2 and 5 months, so I suppose they are a little young. We plan on opening them each an account soon, and depositing money into that account for their futures.. We wouldn't spend their money, its not ours. Having said that, My family was quite poor when we grew up, and my grandmother would send us 5 dollars for our birthdays, and my parents would spend it on groceries. It would make me angry when I was a kid, and I still don't think it was the best idea, but when your kids are hungry, you don't think of it that way I suppose. SO I could see if you really needed the money and didn't have a way to pay it back, where it may be justifiable, but if you don't need it, and just want it.. I think you are being very selfish. Your children will resent you for it.

We just opened an account for our daughter a couple of months ago, although she is just 16 months old now. She has been getting money from family members and I just wanted to have a place to put her money until she is old enough to spend it on something she wants. I will admit we did spend some of it before we opened the account, but it was to buy things that we needed for her that we didn't have the money for at the time.
